What kind of costs does a coffer ceiling add on a 20x24 room with 11 ft. ceilings? If we were to use the same materials? I realize it's a ballpark number, but am building a house and really love this look.

    Hello Robyn,
The picture you have tagged of the coffered ceiling is beautiful and would compliment any formal or casual area. I'm not sure of your budget but I wanted you to be aware that there are optional ways of doing a coffered ceilings that may reduce costs.
The traditional way of doing a coffered ceiling is to frame out the ceiling and wrap it in dimensional lumber and moldings. A less expensive option would be to frame the ceiling and cover it in drywall. Depending on the amount of detail you are trying to achieve, you can add wood or urethane moldings to the drywall and finish it off with any paint treatment you can imagine. I am in the process if completing a project where the client wanted a traditional feel but wanted it to complete some of the homes more modern features. I have added some pictures for you to see the "almost completed results" of the dining area. I can wait to do the completed photo shoot!

Please feel free to see more photos of my projects at my website @ interiortrend.com.

    Hope this was helpful.

Robyn, the cost varies greatly on your location and what the market bears. I would recommend talking with your contractor or a local supply house. If you were to do a version similar to this photo with available molding profiles (avoiding custom shapes for the "crown" profile) and if I had to try to give a ballpark number I would say anywhere from $5 to $20 per square foot.

I agree, the cost stated above sounds realistic for our area (Phila.). I would also a check with your contractor and get a budget number before you come up with a final design.
The pictures that I attached using the combination of drywall and wood moldings cost approximately $10.00sf.
