I'd bump it out 3' if I could. Every little bit of space helps.

3 ft is a lot and will make an even bigger difference. Go for it.

The other thing is that for 2 1/2 - 3 feet, you can use a shed roof or wider wooden bracket supported overhang beyond the current front wall to extend the space and save $. Or use the brackets to extend a covered zone beyond the front door - a dry place to stand with groceries while you fumble for the key . . .The only thing to consider is the exterior elevation . . since you have a split level with high ceilings at the entry, you may not need to go up all the way for it to look right., but you want to consider it. If you do, you could add clerestory windows at the top to bring in more light and help this add to your homes' curb appeal. You might do a lighthouse sort of treatment with a curved front to the door to gain more space but still skirt the well . .. . post a photo of the front of your home and we'll give you more ideas. . . Is your preference / house contemporary or traditional?
