How do I work around this pattened sofa?

Sofa is in great shape. Not that old. Would rather have a solid but... Recliner is old and needs to go. What suggestions would you have for a chair to relax in? Also what kind of pillows can I use with the sofa.

I'd put a slipcover on it and use twist pins to get it snug

the look you are trying to achieve is more of a transitional/ traditional look... you have a lot going on here between the rug and the sofa... so clean and simple is key... you can get a lazy boy recliner in an ultra suede fabric in a soft tan. Some solid deep red or burgundy pillows in chenille or silk to add texture... maybe reupholster the ottoman/coffee table with same fabric to tie it all in...

Maybe you're tired of the red chair? How about a green. Remember take all the colors in your room from the rug. The rug is your starting point. I think your rug has a muddy green, it does not have to be the exact same green for the chair but a green that blends (or like the pillows or green in sofa). The ottoman is fine in beige as long as the chair is not beige. If the chair is beige, the beige ottoman might not work. I think your pillows are really nice, leave them.

AS far as a comfortable chair, you have to sit in them to determine. Recliners are comfortable and they make some today that are fashionable as well. If it's a quality piece, i would have that sofa reupholstered - it must be 20 years old, so it's time to be redone.

Select your colors from your rug - Perhaps a nice gold for the sofa and green for a new pair of armchairs?

Whatever you do - Don't choose another recliner...
...there are beautiful armchairs out there that, when paired with an ottoman, make for perfectly comfortable lounging.

Surprisingly the sofa is only 5 years old. I don't know what I was thinking when I got that pattern. Do you know how much it might cost to reupholster? I know it depends on fabric as well. Just a ball park estimate. Thanks for any info.
