I would sand, prime, and paint!

Whether you should remove the front design depends entirely on what colour you choose. Because of your hinges and gaps between cabinet doors, without the design the cabinets may start looking budget (see yellow cabinets below).
Maybe go for a bold sophisticated colour like black, if it suits your house. The design will enhance the look rather than detract from it.
Also using darker colours means you won't have to change your handles if its not in your budget.

Have you considered painting the lowers one color and the uppers another? The wood looks good. Are they solid? What kind of room do you have in the kitchen? Is there enough room to add an island. You can make one from Box Store "shelf" cabinets which would also zip up the look. It doesn't have to be large just large enough to be functional.
