noticed there are no lights over island; when is this appropriate?

I have 8 foot ceilings. Planning not to use pendants or chandelier over 6x31/2 foot island. Think it could get crowded as kitchen is small. Hope you can comment as I am agonizing with electrician about this. Thank you.

This kitchen actually only has about 7.5' ceilings, so that was the reason we did not use pendants or a chandelier. If you do use pendants, they should have very small or slender proportions. Usually that leads to a more contemporary styled light fixture. So, if you have a traditional kitchen, and like more lantern or larger scaled fixtures, I would avoid using them over a smaller island with lower ceilings.
