Great place - when you say modern, that can mean contemporary to some people, or just indicate you want to update but stay traditional. I've pulled a couple of different versions of modern / contemporary . . the second to sort of inspire your thinking . ..

A metal roof can be a cool high end feature - standing seam ? You could head cottage traditional or high end contemporary. Either way relies a great deal on what you do with the windows. . divided muntins as you have now give the place some cottage charm . . but could be updated - careful if you replace with solid glass no muntins . . need pro guidance to break up / create new contemporary patterns with your choices . .

Either way a pergola over the garage would be a great way to tie into the lower roof line / fascia and carry it across . . you can do that traditional with curved wood brackets or modern with flat cedar hung from above with right angled stainless . . here's both [houzz=] or my pick as inspiration for you . .

You are in the right climate to grow flowering vine on it year round and add to the sheltered feeling of this terrific courtyard element . .

What I liked about the second house was that it combined some metal roof with some shingle, and some board and batten with siding to give a coastal cottage feel . .

They kept some of the charm of the scale of the traditional (triple double hung windows - see the kitchen as you page thru) but gave it an update.

Your requirements in hurricane country are different . .. stucco is the right finish to stick with . . . but you might keep the pavers, clad the brick entry in large format limestone tile - possibly in an ashlar pattern on the walls - very classic, and paint the stucco to match the limestone elements . . a creamier white would do you some good . . you might echo the entry wall with address down off the drive near the road on both sides . . incorporate site walls for drama . let some things be driftwood gray . . .

If you are going contemporary (photo left) or headed to a fresh twist on coastal charm, the most important elements to signal this are: new entry door (you could keep yours and paint it for the second twist for cost savings if needed), new garage doors. Select them carefully . . .

With an architects help, you could go international style, add a belly band of wide siding / trim from top of lower roof down to fascia across the garage and front elevation - wrap the bottom of the upper story . .. . but to pull this off you probably need a pro lead you through the rest of the details, more of a james bond mod. This would work with the limestone suggestions well though . . .
