One trend I don't like is placing the TV over the fireplace. I understand why people do it, but unless you have a very large room, the angle is bad for watching TV.

I am a collector which is " classic" to me or maybe a trend I will never let go! Each room or area of my home has it's own theme/collection.

Mirrored sliding closet doors. I was ready to change mine to mirrored doors, until someone told me "That's so '80's." I thought it would be a practical solution to a small bedroom.

Just finished rock'nroll alcove, including psychedelic butterflies on bench.

My husband can't let go of those fake indoor trees with twinkly white lights. He's mired in the 80's.....or was it the 70's?

@helbel - I have 2 small bedrooms with the mirrored doors that take up most of one wall, when I bought the house I was planning on replacing with wood doors. Then my painter suggested I temporarily reverse the doors to the blank side to see if I liked the look of the rooms with no reflected light and the illusion of depth the mirrors give. Mirrored doors won out even though I would have replaced them immediately in a bigger room. Without the mirrors the rooms were like a small box with the walls closing in.

Mirrors are always useful in small rooms for "opening up" the room , bring in reflected light, and not making one feel claustrophobic. They don't have to be overwhelming, but tailored to the scale of the room. .

Drapes are a trend I can't let go of. I know people are going toward windows with nothing on them but I am not ready to give them up. Nothing like full silk panels on a window!

I can't seem to be without a nice table cloth :)

Wingback chairs and Windsor chairs, dark furniture, Jacobean prints...their popularity comes and goes, but I just love these things.

I am still totally in love with both toiles and English cottage-type florals!

I still like my now partial (was5 pieces) pine bookcase from the 1980's. I still like the bit of accenting light paint antiquing in the dentin grooves along the top and the half sunbursts along the drawers. The corner pieces give a place to add decor, flowers, books as we walk into our small home. It fills and anchors a long sloping tall wall. I could not take the prettiest piece but I like what I have. I use it for books I'm reading and last summer a friend and I used command strips to attach mirrors so it doesn't seem so dark since the piece is deeper than a regular bookcase. I'm rather enjoying what the sun has been doing to the wood these last years. Its so not as light of a honey color anymore. I suppose everyone would paint it but me? I'll just leave it be for me.

What goes around, comes around. I remember as a girl wondering why in the world my grandmother kept her dark wood floors and dark bronze hardware and then it came back into style about 7 years ago or so. When I built our new home I thought carefully about the finishes I wanted for hardware. Little touches carry a big impact when they are installed throughout a whole house. I knew they were less on trend but I decided to go with the bright brass I love. I'm sure that it will come back into style.; meanwhile I'm happy with my brass faucets, hinges and doorknobs. I'm sad that chintz prints are out - very hard to find and they look very dated in this time of geometrics and prints which bring to mind prints I knew in the early 60's that we couldn't wait to get rid of! If you live long enough, I'm convinced, you'll see them all cycle through again - watch out for avocado green and turquoise appliances!

I love my great big comfy couch (yes, the chintz is slip covered now) and pale pine furniture! I prefer to think they are classics that came to light in the 80's and have stayed...

I like my 'Bisque' colored appliances that are 15 years old. We are building a new home and I have never liked stainless steal appliances. When I walk through the showroom, I want to grab a bottle of Glass cleaner and wipe off all the finger prints. I don't like black or white either. What other options are there?

The current trend - minimalism.

It's my home. It will be esthetically appealing but it will contain things I love. Possibly more than some would find necessary. I don't want a room that represents a design magazine page or even a photo on Houzz. I want to be surrounded by sentimental items and those particular to my life, not a design formula.

Agree with you deb, but I don't think minimalism is a trend...I just think there are people who want and can live without "stuff" surrounding them. When we first retired early eight years ago and relocated to a small apartment in Philly, I had given away or disposed of furniture and belongings, keeping only special items, thinking we could live in a spare environment...just could not do it...living in a spare house was not "us". Little by little, more books, china, pillows, throws, lamps, tables and art came back in. Now, living on Cape Cod in a slightly larger condo apartment, like you, we are surrounded by what we love and enjoy looking at.

Crystal door knobs. We are fortunate to have a house built in 1950 which has all the original interior wood doors (never painted and in amazing condition) and original crystal knobs throughout. Lately I have been seeing crystal door hardware (reclaimed or new, which are often acrylic) in more places, so I think the trend is returning. They are elegant and classy touches that bring a touch of sparkle!

French country anything. I was in mourning when Pierre Deux closed. :(

I don't care for trendy, prefer classics...there are even classic in modern. I do agree with Belle Chaise about Pierre Deux closing...they were classic French country!

I like the look of wood.

Glass topped rust iron coffee table purchased in 1994. I still love it. Don't see myself adding anything else in rust, though. Glad I did resist anything in verde.

I still like wood colored wood, preferably lightish colored. I love the staircase in the picture.

I remember when we were first married and looking for a home everyone (ourselves included) wanted light wood cabinets. I wasn't picky....didn't care what the cabinets looked like as long as they weren't dark! A couple years ago I heard 2 girls talk about looking for their first homes and they were like "I don't care what the cabinets look like as long as they aren't light!' lol

@Diane Dobson-Gemmell: Buy the new appliances in white, and then take them to your local auto-body shop, where they can paint them in any color you want! I had an older tractor-mower painted glossy black with orange/red flames on it! I have also seen mailboxes done--anything metal or fiberglass can be painted at the auto body shop! And it is usually cheaper to have it done yourself, to appliances you really like the performance of, than to buy custom colored appliances that have custom prices as well. Just a thought, anyway!

A red sofa. I always wanted one and finally got one a few years ago, long after that trend came and went!

I love my microwave over the stove and my mirrored closet doors--so 80s--still love them. :) (Shhhh...they are in the bedroom. Don't tell anyone.)

We love our ceiling fans. It's a fixture you don't often see in the fabulous rooms displayed on the houzz or hgtv sites. We have one in the living room, family room, kitchen, music room, work-out room and all three bedrooms. We use them from late spring to early fall and they really make a difference in the overall comfort of the home.

We also have slightly textured ceilings throughout the first floor of the house. It's not the full-on "popcorn" effect, just a bit of a swirl, and I don't see anything wrong with it. It's certainly not anything we'd ever take the time or use the money to change. You don't even notice it.

White beadboard. I will always adore it. Not a fan of mid-century modern. Too sterile in most cases, though "touches" of it here and there is o.k. I always like the warmth and hominess of the country cottage look (not the blue, pine shelves with hearts hearts and abundance of knick-knacks from the 80's, blech). French country is nice, too. I NEVER liked gold-toned fixtures even when they were in style. And I wish vinyl/linoleum flooring would come back, with technological advancements that make it look classier. I love how it isn't cold to the feet, reduces echo, cushions your joints from standing long periods, has no grout to upkeep or try to keep clean (you can't), and is easy to replace when a new look is desired.

Wooden curtain/drapery rods with rings. My parents had them starting in the '50s, and I installed almost identical ones when I moved into my current house in 2007. Not just nostalgia ... nothing I've found in intervening years makes opening and closing so easy!

I also like brass - the laquered kind so you do not have to polish it. I do not know what I will do for faucets, etc. I do not like the naturally- patina'd brass.

Yes Divinemrsm, ceiling fans!!! We have them in great room and all bedrooms. We did switch them out from white and fancy to sleek and dark! So wonderful in central California!

Trends always puzzle me - who is dictating what is in or out of style? I think it is the mechanism that guarantees that we will become dissatisfied with what we have, and go out and buy new and different, even if the old is functioning perfectly, still beautiful, and we actually still like it. My mother took very good care of her furniture and cabinets, and even though it still looked like new when she died, it was worth very little because it was out of style but not old enough to be an antique. I can't give up what few pieces of mid-century modern we have left - Hooker Mainline walnut dresser with mirror and Lane tables. I wish we still had our Craft Associates chairs and sofa - when I see them in photos they look classic to me.

Belle Chaise....I also mourned when Pierre Deux closed. I'm still bummed about it. I love French Country! I also have ceiling fans, very pretty ones! We live in the desert where it gets HOT and I don't give a flying fig if they are on trend or not, they help us sleep without running the air conditioner all night. I think the people who decided they are dated must live in cold climates and have no idea how hard it is to sleep at night when it's still 80 degrees outside! A pretty chandelier above my bed is not helpful when we are hot, not to mention I really have better things to do with my money other than giving it to the electric company.

I don't follow trends, neither in interior design nor fashion. That's not to say that I don't like certain current pieces or colors, but I don't like them *because* they are up to date, and I will still like them when they are considered oldfashioned. This allows me to buy expensive pieces and materials, because I will keep them for decades.

While there are many lovely, inspirational photos of rooms on houzz, I can't picture my husband cutting the grass, weeding the garden and washing the car when it's humid and 85 degrees out, hot, shirtless and sweating, walking in the backdoor and being happy to see a chandelier hung from the ceiling. Give this man a ceiling fan and turn it up so he can cool down!

It was up to 108º one day recently (yes, in May), so believe me, my five ceiling fans are here to stay. As with all unappealing but necessary fixtures, I buy the least hideous ones I can afford and decorate around them.

Yes, some of us need them, makaloco. Some of them are actually pretty! They are much better than having ugly plug in fans scattered all over the house.

I have always been a fan of old appliances that still actually work.
I have an art deco toaster, a '47 stove, a 1960 Vita-Mix blender/soup maker/ice cream maker/ margarita maker/ and all around mega-machine, and lastly... 1940's G.E. kitchen timer.

The one thing that these all have in common....Made in the USA & heavy metal construction.
These were not made to be "disposable" items.

We actually think our ceiling fans look nice. The one in our kitchen has oil rubbed bronze blades and base with an etched glass globe and goes very nicely with the two oil rubbed light fixtures in that room. The one in our living room has been there over 15 years yet still doesn't seem dated and we selected all white ones for the bedrooms and they tend to blend in with the ceiling.

Although I believe "less is more" I can't seem to stop myself from having lots of African Violets and antiques on every surface of my heirloom tables. I swear if you didn't know better you'd think a very old woman lived in my home. I inherited very old furniture and I gravitate to old pieces when I want to buy. My garden is the same way. I love simple Asian gardens but I have all kinds of flowers blooming everywhere and too many pots on my porch, deck and patio. Another trend is numerous china collections, linens, embroidered piilow cases and dish towels. I just can't let go of the past and I love vintage table cloths. So old is the trend that I just can't let go.

Ceiling Fans are 'OUT' ?? I just thought the white ones with gold painted highlights on the blades were 'out'. I adore Arts & Crafts/Craftsman and replace accessories with more contemporary items when needed.

Ceiling Fans are NOT out. Middle aged woman with hot flashes will always exist and so will ceiling fans.

I don't often see ceiling fans in the rooms featured on houzz or hgtv, ect. Why is that? I have them in many rooms in my house and they add a wonderful level of comfort.

Ceiling fans are not featured in "designed" houses. But for real people with a need to maintain heat or cool they are not out and they have never been out. Designed houses make a pretty picture which is what they are supposed to do. They give us ideas to consider, but not laws to follow.

All the dark granite countertops that everyone HAD to have a few years ago are now "out" and quartz is "in."

Still stuck on shabby chic. Currently limited to my bedroom. Also love cottage and beadboard, although growing up we called it wainscoting.

I'm very much into cottage style, even though I never considered it a trend. I started it when I was very young, and was picking up mismatched furniture from here and there, mostly curbside. I painted it all white to tie it all together, and since I love flowers, I made cushions out of floral materials. I still love that style, with the pastels and clean, white furniture.

I also still love tiled countertops. Never did get into the granite/stone countertop phase.
