I am the lucky new owner of an 1890s "bungalow" -- I like to think of it as my in-town farmhouse -- in St. Peter, MN. The white-sided segment is the kitchen. The board and batten is actually newer siding. The kitchen roof needs replacement, the porch off the kitchen is rotten, and the foundation needs some repair in that area, as well. (The stone foundation on that side of the house is sitting on dirt cellar walls, so we will most likely jack up the house and do a cement pour.) I have a reliable contractor prepared to go to work on all three of these projects. My question to you all--what should I ask for in terms of the new kitchen roof? It currently has a little pitch--obviously not enough. I'm seeking a design to keep the snow from weighing too heavily and to maintain the historic style. My contractor has suggested a truss room above the kitchen, but I don't actually need more square footage. Maybe a covered balcony? or just a steeper kitchen roof? Another question, less urgent, concerns the siding--keep the mismatched siding or go with white? While I'm at it, I'll also take recommendations on roofing materials and colors!
