Revived an 80's Kitchen

My wife and I moved into our current home (built in '86) 8 months ago and have just completed our first bit of remodeling. Much of the house was unchanged since the 80s and the kitchen was the most obvious candidate for a refresh. We removed the old 6x6 tile countertops, tile backsplash, valance/fluorescent light over the sink, appliances, sink, and fixtures. To save a big chunk of money, we opted to keep the cabinets and give them a good cleaning. Updates included new Jenn-Air dishwasher and range, granite countertops with larger than original island top, marble tile backsplash, under-counter LED lighting, sink & fixtures, and a new light over the sink where the valance used to be.

very nice. Goes to show if your cabinets are in good condition, no need to change them just because they are from the 80's. Nice choice in countertops and backsplash

Very nicely done. Amazing how that little scalloped valance type of trim over the sink dates a kitchen so fast. Removing it makes a big difference in addition to all of your other great changes.

Thanks, everyone! You're so right, deborita...when we bought the house, the first thing we said was, that valance has to go! Taking it out and replacing an old florescent strip with a simple hanging fixture made such a difference. Thanks for noticing that!

Thanks, beachlily! We found that tile at a local place called Paul G. White Interior Solutions. I don't recall the exact name of the tile, but it's made of marble, yet somewhat of a slate look. We had it installed on the 3rds rather than on the halfs to give a bit more random look. Eliot Hull at Paul G. White in Portland, Maine could tell you exactly what the tile is. http://www.paulwhitetile.com/

what did you use to clean/ shine cabinets?

What a fantastic transformation with simple, smart backsplash and countertop changes with the existing cabinetry. Just beautiful! Also thank you for taking the same photo views :) It is easier to compare 'before' and 'after' when the POV is the same each time!

Hi Katerlyn - we started with a good once over with warm soapy water and then smoothed and shined them up with Orange Glo.

Keith thanks so much. I've been using Murphy's oil soap and it never fixes cabinets like you have...the only thing else I see under my Mom's cabinet is Weiman Natural Lemon Oil furniture polish with sunscreen, Guardsman Furniture polish wood scent and OLD ENGLISH® Furniture Scratch Cover, For Dark Woods,...Never knew her secret! I will try to find Orange Glo.

Love the countertops and backsplash! The pendant over the sink is nice too. To add a little more change, consider painting the island a different color, one that would complement the stone? I think that would look great!

Beachlily - You asked a while back about the backsplash tile. I didn't provide you with the name of it before, but I was just looking at the box of leftover tile and it's called Lady Gray. Not sure who the manufacturer is, but that's the name of the tile. It's 2 x 8 x 3/8, brushed. And the grout we chose is called Warm Gray. As you can see, we installed the tiles on the 3rds rather than the halves to try to give it a more random look.

Thanks Keith!! Perfect timing as the backsplash decision is all that's left. Much appreciated!

Very nice! Cabinets are in great shape! Too many people make massive changes when really a good updating is more than enough!

Hi diyher. The countertops are a granite called Snowflake. Not sure if you can tell in the photos, but the granite is generally tones of gray with beautiful dark veins and cranberryish colored spots that seem to draw nicely on the cabinet color.
