Too much blue?

This is my formal dining room converted to a home office. I'm thinking of painting the walls SW Silvermist 7621. Do you think it would be too much blue with the rug and pillows?

Debbie...only because you asked me. Paint the lower part of the wall blue. How about the shade that is between the two on the car? What color is it? You could purchase sample pots and paint the various shades on the wall then decide which color. Paint the upper half with the Wool Skein.
I have to run, but will add more later. :-)

Thanks, janishill! Exactly what I was thinking...blue on the bottom and Wool Skein on the top. There's a dining room on Houzz with a similar color scheme that I really like.

The blue walls would bright up the room. I would add some bright green and yellow accessories to make this room more lively.

I love the color, I am glad you painted the entire wall.

Debbie - the silvermist is terrific, I love the hardware and why not have some red too. Glad it is coming together as you hoped - the blue is so calm - great for a home office.

Very very nice! Room looks great!
    I made a few tweaks.
I think the mirror is too small. Or perhaps you could add two pics on each side for a total of four.
bevballew, I agree the mirror is a little too small for the table, but I'd like to try and make it work. I ordered it almost two years ago for another space and ended up not using it there. It has been in the box in my living room. Do you mean add more pictures on the table? I moved the floral arrangement to the right some. I know it doesn't look like it, but the table and mirror are centered between a door on the left and the wall on the right.
The tweaks make a lot of difference! Much better.

Oh..btw...I like the owl vase and bookends. :-D

Thanks, janishill. I love my owls! ;-)

I can not see it, but I think I would move the table and the mirror closer to the door you are talking about so that it does not go behind the side of the chair in our view. If this is not a layout that you are use too, it will appear odd at first, but normal in a few days. ( Grant it that I can not see it all in this picture and could be wrong, there may not be enough room for you ro move it left) :o)

Hi, I'm new to the discussion. Lovely room. I do agree with Ms. Poulous and think that the table would look better moved just a little away from the chair. Also, I like the mirror, but if you want to fill out the space on either side, you could add some small sconces, or maybe some smaller, more narrow mirrors, or some kind of narrow prints?
    Enjoy your space. ")

    How about a smaller table?
I would move the table and mirror closer to door and add a large plant to corner of room to help the scale.
No! I think the blue would be great. It will make the accents pop. Maybe adding a splash of orange here and there as accent pieces would help offset the blue.
It is probably too late but I am not liking the black lamp. It seems heavy.
I do love your room though! The color on the walls is perfect!
uniquevirtue, thank you, but I have already painted the walls blue. I am down to accessorizing.

Ugh! I have already had to lower the mirror once. It is extremely heavy and the anchors make huge holes in the wall. I'll take the mirror down and center the table on the entire wall to see what it looks like. I was thinking a fig leaf would look nice in that corner.
Barbie, I can't return the lamp. I ordered it online. It was advertised as smaller than it is and it was supposed to be more bronze, not black. :-(
  • 13 years ago
It certainly doesn't ruin the room, it's still very beautiful. Would you be up for painting it? Of course if you love it that is all that matters. haha
  • 13 years ago
Here's the table centered on the entire wall.

Love the color and painting the whole wall was the best idea. I also like the lamp and smaller table. Can you move the table but leave the mirror in the same place ? I maybe wrong about that. Fab job

Debbie, you are doing a very nice job on this room. And, all you have left are minor tweaks. I think moving the console over nearer the door is perfect. Consoles are such the new thing aren't they! Composition is key both on the larger scale (the room) and smaller scale (ie tables).

May I suggest that on the top of the console move the vase to the center add some white/cream hydrangeas and some tall twisty brown twigs for height, And then do a smaller version of the family pictures on the table. Perhaps add a small crystal/glass item to catch the light.
I like the smaller table and then the mirror will look better especially with a tree in the corner. I had originally thought two pics on each side,of the mirror with the larger console centered. This new arrangement better.
Thanks, Mary Poulos. That's funny...I had an antique crystal candy jar on the table, but removed it. I agree the frames are too big. I tried the vase centered, but it seemed like it covered too much of my pretty mirror. I'll give that a try again. So, you think the mirror will look OK centered above the table? It just seems like it would look unbalanced.

    Hi Debbie, suggestions to try:

You could switch the position of the vase with the arrangement that is in it now to the other end of the console. As the larger size of it will balance what is happening on the other side of the console, which are the heavy chairs. A better balance. Then put a picture on the right hand side of the table to balance the arrangement and then a low, horizontal piece like a box or something between the vase and the picture with your mirror above.

Or you could do as I had suggested above (and I think you will love the white hydrangeas as they play to all the white aspects of the room) and put the vase in the center. Center the mirror behind the arrangement, and reflect the arrangement back into the room. Although it is possible that the mirror would then be too small. So you would have to play with that. Moving the mirror up and down to find a spot that works well with both the mirror and the arrangement (if possible :o) ...)
I see what you mean about adding the white/cream hydrangeas. I'm no floral arranger, but I'll give it a try! Thanks, Mary!

And thank you, janishill, for suggesting I forego the two-toned walls and paint all the same color. I love the outcome!

I have painted a room with SW Persimmon. Do you think your rug would match? I need to find area rug to go with persimmon and SW shagreen and pull some blue....
shortped, SW Persimmon is the middle color on this card. I think it goes great! Excuse my pink toes in the picture! LOL!
SW Shagreen is the third from the top.

Debbie....thank you!! I had asked you about your rug awhile back and have debated on trying but you hate to order a large thing and try to send back....looks great! And so does your room!
And your toes look nice too...lol
And it looks like there might be SW cupola yellow there too, which is another accent color!
The blue walls look great! I'm glad you painted the entire wall the same color.
Debbie...the color that comes just below the persimmon is the color you should use instead of red. Either that one or the one below it would work so much better.

Please don't hate me for telling you this. :-)
If you painted all the walls, and the borders then yes, I think it would be too much. However, you can just paint the walls and leave the borders white, or just the bottom/top half of the walls around the borders. I don't remember if it was you, but if you are looking for eco-friendly painting company here is a website: www.thinkgreenpaintingcorp.com.

shortped, I remember you asking about the rug. I just happen to keep SW chips on hand! I should get a kick back from Overstock. I just checked and the rug is $40 cheaper now! Grr...

janishill, if you are referring to the pillows on the chairs, they're not red. They're brick! I've got my eye out for pillows in the persimmon family. I may have to find fabric and make them. The "red" pillows will go nicely in my family room. The color below Persimmon is Baked Clay and I agree it would work better. No hard feelings here. :)

Janishill, I agree with you and Debbie I am glad that you are already on board with that I know how Janishill feels. Sometimes we don't want to overwhelm the poster with our thoughts, but it will look very nice with that change.

Debbie - I do like your new room -great colour.

Debbie, I also think was nice of you to take the time for shortped
  • 13 years ago
shortped was very helpful with making suggestions for my new office chair seven months ago. It's the least I can do!
    Thanks again!
Last update! I left the mirror centered between the door on the left and the wall on the right, but moved the table over. I found these lumbar pillows for the chairs. The plant in the corner is temporary until I can find a fiddle leaf fig or something else tall. Mary, I had some white hydrangeas in my hand at Hobby Lobby, but was in a rush and the checkout line was too long. I had to put them back, but I'll try again.

The table looks so much better without the red books and the new pillows are very nice. Thanks for thinking of the hydrangeas, but I certainly understand long check out lines. I would have done the same, I think :o)
