After looking at a lot of kitchen islands, we really like this shape. It's a very nice balance of allowing people in the kitchen to interact with a lot of different guests while cooking, but also allowing guests to interact with each other. It also allows entrance to the kitchen from either end of the island and leaves enough space between this island and the stove, etc. that people don't have to bump into each other in the kitchen.
Sink and counter in front of large window, thin hood profile, less dramatic height difference between island levels (just high enough for power outlets). Seating and standing room around island so people can congregate while we cook. Workable counter space between sink and stove. Dislike open shelves for dust reasons, would replace with full cabinets
