I love the look of the rounded rocks in a wall. Consider a small bit of that in the garden somehow.

Large tiles for a smooth, easy to clean surface? Article mentions using a permeable bedding mortar and grout to allow water to flow through the patio's grout into the gravel layer below.

Sea of color. Maybe plant thyme between bushes and grass between box elder and garage? Might need something else that tolerates shade better. Could that spot handle moss?

Too modern, but we might be able to incorporate the idea of the raised gardens on the perimeter. Could be nice for easy access to herbs or for planting strawberries - or anything else as we age and getting low to the ground is harder.
