Some areas were filled with "baserock" material to bring the grade of the patio to the same level of the house. This allows for a more convenient and pleasing transition from inside to outside. Be carefull how this is done! You cannot just pile materials up against the house. Waterproofing and flashing of wood walls is necessary, as well as maintaining adequate air ventilation to the crawlspace.
