Back to the notion of shelves. Still provides balance to the fireplace, but no place for art there. I'm still thinking about putting the Sudlows in the dining area.

1. Ignore gross lights. 2. Captures some of what we're after, with firebox linear and placed as we've discussed. I'm still ok with bookshelves; we are readers, after all.

I wonder if we could get a product that looks like concrete but minimizes the presence of grout. Our mantle and hearth would be smaller, but real concrete still would be heavy. I do like the look, however.

A more dramatic upright statement. I'm still baffled by Galen's insistence for a tile or stone surround when so MANY photos on Houzz don't appear to have one. What's the deal? These folks don't know better or don't care about cracking?
