Great Strapping idea. Like the width of the bottom piece but for my top. I would not be having two pieces of strapping.

This top strapping is probably too wide but I like the bottom strapping width. I would not be doing both a top and bottom strapping.. But I do like the look of the strapping and what looks like clavos on it.

I still like some sort of metal caps and strapping on the newels I would like strapping a bit wider than this photo. No knuckles on the balusters and one balusters seems to have that distressed look I am trying to find.
