I don't know how I feel about this, but look at the lower part of the island - the top is butcher block, and kids could stand (or sit) and help meal prep. (The butcher block makes me think of cutting veggies.)

With all the windows in the lakehouse, we could likely get away with all this wood/planks as the heaviness of this would be offset by the open floor plan and the openness due to all the windows.
Ceiling, vertical planks on the far wall (behind the fire place), island with raised bar....perhaps we have a bar along the edge of the kitchen where it steps up to great room (instead of a see thru fireplace???)

Raised counter isn't a bar but rather a bookshelf, and works to hide the mess on the counters of the kitchen...plus it's wood so it looks like a piece of furniture.
I like how this coffee bar can be hidden by closing the doors
