Task Lighting: A light that helps people see the task they’re doing by shining directly onto the surface of where the task will take place. This light needs to shine in front of the person rather than on top of or behind someone to be able to function so that their view isn’t obstructed by things like their shadow.
Recessed Lighting: A type of lighting where the light is placed on the other side of the ceiling, so only the face part of the fixture is visible. There are different types of recessed lighting such as baffle, open, reflector, and eyeball. Baffle recessed lighting has a bulb high up in the fixture and the fixture has a black interior that absorbs the light in the can, which reduces the amount of reflection coming out, making it the most popular type of recessed lighting. Open recessed lighting has the bulb sticking all the way out, which makes it appear less attractive to some people. Reflectors give more light but tend to produce more glare because of their reflective and clear surface. The eyeball light can move in different directions to create accent or task lighting.
2x2 Fixture or 2x4 Fixture: Fixtures typically used in offices that come in 2x2 square or 2x4 rectangular shapes and use fluorescent tube light bulbs. They originally had a flat surface that produced a lot of reflection causing a lot of glare and strain on people’s eyes, but newer ones are starting to use u-shaped supports that help the reflection bounce back up before coming down, reducing the amount of glare produced.
Incandescent Bulb: Traditional light bulbs that use lead wires that lead electricity into these very fine, twisted wires called filaments that heat up to produce a lot of light, as well as heat. They aren't used as much today because they emit a lot of heat and use a lot of electricity, making them energy inefficient, but usually serve as a great decorative purpose in interior spaces.
Fluorescent Bulb: Light bulbs that don’t emit heat and are instead lit up from electricity mixing with the gas in the tube causing the phosphorus to glow, which is more energy efficient. These light bulbs were typically long strip tubes with a cool, blue, unflattering light, but can now come in warmer color temperatures and round spiral shapes that can be placed in regular fixtures found in the home.
Natural Lighting: A pure, bright, white light from the sun that contains a full spectrum of colors and can make things such as the color and reflections of rooms in the interior space appear differently based on the time of day and climate the interior space is in.
