Postcard pretty. A rooftop nook like this one is achievable on just about any rooftop. The first step is to designate a seating area by laying timber decking over the existing surface. Snap-together deck tiles could be just the thing. Add an outdoor corner suite and some garden chairs, and all that’s left to do is pop in plenty of flowering pot plants. This area is as perfect for curling up with a good book and a cup of tea as it is for gathering with friends late into the night. Candles or fairy lights will create an even more magical atmosphere when the sun goes down.
Take it one step at a time This divine piece features delicate woodwork, distressed paint, and soft colours that just work. Take the drawers out and paint the body first before deciding on which colour to paint the drawer fronts. You may choose to go in a new colour direction for contrast.
Lettuce and rocket are great places to start – they’re both thirsty plants, but don’t require too much sun or maintenance.
Real furniture. As long as you don’t live in a place with severe weather, go ahead and use indoor furniture outside. A coat of exterior paint can give a thrift store coffee table new life and new strength. I believe bright dollops of turquoise are always a good idea.

Walls As seen here, walls don’t need to be full height to make great transition spaces. These low walls hold back the grade on the site and provide ample seating for gathering. There’s a reason for them being sized and shaped the way they are, and their terraced design makes for a diverse experience in this outdoor transition space. Site walls such as this can help us to utilize the full vertical space on a lot and markedly enhance privacy
Vines. Vines may be planted within rock crevices in wall facades or along the top and allowed to cascade downward. Vines to consider include ornamental raspberry (Rubus calycinoides, zones 6 to 9), creeping Jenny (Lysimachia nummularia ‘Aurea’, zones 3 to 9), and bougainvillea (Bougainvillea cvs, zones 9 to 11). Some vines can be invasive in certain areas, so be sure to do your research before planting them. More great vines
Mason jar lamps also work well hung under an umbrella with LED candles set in lavender.
How about this? A single branch suspended from the ceiling holds a cluster of candlelit jars. (My wife is in love … although I think it’s more with Pierce Brosnan than with the jar light fixture!)
