Dark Leafy Green Given it’s the room we cook in — and often eat in — it makes sense to clad a kitchen in appetizing colors. This gorgeous deep green reminds me of my favorite vegetables and therefore really draws my eye into the space. It’s a fantastic accent color for the row of cabinets in this beautiful modern-rustic kitchen. The plentiful white, wood and gold-hued accents keep the space light, bright and open.
After: The earthy look of cellular concrete masonry building blocks with round holes inspired Sass to design this custom tile. “It all began with this tile,” Sass says. A project in Majorca, Spain, that used the building blocks in a decorative way had captured her imagination. “We wanted to re-create the look of this architectural material as a handmade tile for the fireplace,” she says. Grout fills the holes in the tiles. The earthy terra-cotta hues in the building blocks she’d admired also inspired the color palette in the room. Sass worked with Clay Squared to Infinity, a local handmade tile studio, to create the tiles. During the process, they crafted mockups to get the proportions just right. They also created a custom glaze: warm beige with peach undertones. Sass repeated this color in the platform and shower tile.
White kitchens continue to be popular among homeowners, but I encourage you to make your white kitchen stand apart from the crowd by adding accents of a fun color or colors that you love. If you have open wall cabinets, try painting the interior panels in your favorite vibrant hue. Of course, this will make the cabinets a focal point, so make sure you’ll be able to keep those shelves neat and tidy and stocked with items that are worthy of being on display. I like to put in a mix of open and closed cabinets, so there’s the flexibility to display worthy items and hide the not-so-worthy. If you cook often or do a lot of frying and sautéing, be aware that grease buildup on displayed items can be an issue. This can be mitigated to some degree by installing a powerful exterior-venting hood and by displaying only items that you use frequently — so that they get washed regularly. I like the mix of traditional fixtures and materials with the modern color palette in the bathroom shown here. The hot orange hue really warms up the cool blue-gray and white. Get the color palette with Florida Gold, Blue Slate and Nickel from Pratt & Lambert. Mole’s Breath One certainly cannot accuse Farrow & Ball of using dull names for paint colors! This medium-dark gray has a good bit of brown, which gives it warmth and richness. This is another neutral that will work with a variety of other colors. I like it best with watery greens and blues or red-raspberry hues. Or stick with a neutral palette and pair it with with other shades of warm gray as well as white.
Cooking Apple Green #32 FARROW AND BALL According to Farrow & Ball, Cooking Apple Green is “an uplifting color … is clean and comforting, not challenging in any way, and it creates an uncomplicated haven in which to live.” This is one of those flexible colors that works well in a variety of spaces — from kitchens and baths to bedrooms and living rooms. It’s also a good choice for an open-concept floor plan, in which you typically want one unifying color that isn’t so assertive that it takes over the entire space.
The vegetal cabinet color here gives this kitchen a welcoming feel. It’s a cool and refreshing hue for kitchens in warm climates, but it has enough warmth that it can also work well in a colder climate. It helps makes this kitchen homey and hospitable.
