I like the continuity between the wood floor inside and the decking outside--similar sized planks, same orientation, almost no transition, but a clear line with the color/material change.

Another screen. Red cedar, about 1-1/2 inch square, mounted on vertical studs to create the separation. Our specific application for the stair tower does not need to have an actual purpose other than to improve the look of the exterior.

Here's a cable rail system that is also nice, but is distinctly different from the wood railings so far. This is a bit lighter and would reduce the apparent 'massing' of the balcony.

Perhaps something like this--a built-in outdoor kitchen kind of thing--would be a way to get around the railing issue on one side.

I feel like this is similar to what we're trying to do with the deck/yard. I also like how they screen the underside of the deck, and note the door for access/storage.
