For basically any hung art, it’s best to give it a little breathing room so it isn’t too close to the molding. For a small piece of art, hang it at least 1 to 2 inches above molding or wainscoting. For larger pieces (36 inches wide or 24 inches tall, and over) give at least 3 inches of space above the molding.
Shiplap, millwork panels and reclaimed wood boards have been around for a while now. But with affordable big box store options and the relative ease with which the average homeowner is able to DIY these materials as accents, expect to see this trend to continue for some time, especially as bedroom feature walls.
The key elements of any kind of wainscoting are the panel and the frame around that panel. This frame comprises four pieces: the top and bottom rails and the two side pieces (aka the stiles). Often the type of panel used determines the name of the wainscoting, such as these common versions: raised-panel wainscoting, flat-panel wainscoting board-and-batten and… beadboard wainscoting.

The designers added custom paneling that introduces depth and texture to the wall. No art required, just a fresh coat of white paint.
