This company does quality work and uses good subcontractors, so I feel good that all the work on my house was done well. They are easy to work with. Communication is pretty good, and if I questioned anything, my concerns were dealt with professionally. For help with design and sourcing fixtures the company referred me to helpful, knowledgeable people too.

Nick and his team are extremely professional and well organized. We started with a budget in mind and they worked with us on scope and creative ideas to ensure we stayed on budget throughout the project. There was a clear schedule that they were able to keep to. Project communication was crisp and change orders were easy to navigate. Overall design turned out great and craftsmanship is extremely high quality. We are very happy with how it turned out.

We are big fans of Heartwood. Nick and crew are always responsive and efficient. They've done three projects for us - bathroom, kitchen, and replacing the chimney/fireplace with a sliding glass door. Each project went smoothly, stayed in budget (except for the items that we added to the scope). The crew were very good about communicating what was next so we weren't wondering about anything. Each project has aged very well - the bathroom was the last one, in 2020. We have had no issues with any of the flooring, roofing, walls, electrical - all systems are doing good. At this point, Heartwood sets the standard. I highly recommend them. Details about projects - if you want to compare scopes: Kitchen - had a U-shaped counter configuration that made it difficult for multiple people to be in the kitchen at once. We removed the counter and replaced it with an oversized island with stove/oven built in. Replaced the other kitchen counter to match. Replaced the flooring and cabinet doors as well as the light fixtures. Living room - removed chimney and fireplace, replacing with an 8' wide sliding glass door. Installed new header to support the roof. Replaced the now missing part of the roof to match the rest. New lighting and floors. Bathroom - new bathtub and surround. New floors and vanity countertop. New mirror cabinet.

Heartwood Residential recently completed a massive undertaking for me: a whole-house deep energy retrofit. They literally took my house down to the studs and foundation, meticulously rebuilding it with green building science principles. The goal? To achieve a net-zero carbon footprint. I had done a lot of research on green building and high performance homes myself prior to selecting a contractor, and since I was essentially keeping the footprint of my house, I did not need much in the way of design help. I was looking for someone that I could feel comfortable collaborating with to turn my vision into reality. After several meetings, I knew that Nick Yegge was the right person. Nick really listened to my wants and needs and offered advice and suggestions that could improve the outcome, while always keeping my budget in mind. In fact, I think Nick was better at watching my budget than I was (it’s sooooo easy to want more)! Nick was a true maestro, coordinating all aspects of the project efficiently (permits, subcontractors, materials, etc.) to stay on schedule as much as possible. More often than not, I would be the cause of a delay, changing my mind on something or other. One of the things I appreciate most about Nick, is his even demeanor. Renovations are inherently stressful anyway. If I had a concern with anything, Nick’s response was always positive – acknowledging my concern and quickly resolving it, making sure I was completely satisfied. When I decided that I wanted a wall removed, after the decision deadline to do so had passed, Nick’s response was perfect, saying that my satisfaction with the overall outcome was what was important. That late decision did mean a permit and inspection, which caused a delay, but, thankfully, not too much of one. I am very, very happy with the final outcome - a lovely, high performance house with a comfortable and healthy environment. I did already have solar panels and a fairly new roof, so that structure and system stayed in place during the renovation. I have not had an official analysis of whether or not I have a net zero carbon house, but with HVAC (a ductless electric mini-split system), and other appliances (all electric) on, we are selling electricity back to the grid on a regular basis! Without hesitation, I highly recommend Nick and Heartwood Residential for your home construction needs.

Nick at Heartwood is amazing to work with. We had a very difficult bathroom remodel, with several audacious design elements thrown in that we knew would make the construction difficult and require extra attention to detail. Nick and his team have been nothing short of phenomenal throughout. Several sourcing delays (COVID!) were handled as quick as possible, and the end result is exactly how we envisioned the space. The attention to detail and craftsmanship is outstanding. Highly recommend Heartwood for your projects!

Heartwood Residential has completed two large remodel projects in my home and I am thrilled with the results! Heartwood management, staff, and contractors were wonderful to work with. Communication between Heartwood, the designer, and myself was excellent. At no time did I feel like I didn't know what was going on or understand the schedule. Heartwood was very responsive to my questions and concerns and did their best to ensure that my children and pets were only necessarily inconvenienced during the projects. Work areas were left clean and tidy at the end of each day and care was taken to maintain the security of my house. The quality of their work was exceptional! Their careful and artistic workmanship produced living spaces that are beyond my imagination! A 75 year old house can present a lot of challenges and I very much appreciated that Heartwood ensured that all of their work was up to code and we passed inspections easily. If a challenge presented itself or if something didn't look right Heartwood never took the easy way out. They explained the problem to me and presented solutions along with full disclosure of any added cost. We are thoroughly enjoying our "new" home. Instead of coming home to a shabby old house, we come home to an almost new home that is welcoming, has modern conveniences, provides wonderful spaces for all of us, and enables us to welcome family and friends with pride. I recommend Heartwood Residential without reservation. In the hopefully not too distant future, I hope to work with them to continue making improvements on our home. Heartwood Residential is truly a professional construction company. As a landscape architect, I’ve seen lots of contractors’ work, some great, others not so. After a competitive bid process, we hired Heartwood to remodel our 1980s-era kitchen. The work involved removing two structural walls and replacing a 30’ ridge beam. From demo through completion, Nick and his team were very easy to work with, well organized and communicative throughout. Five stars for service AND five stars for quality!

Heartwood did a full interior remodel of my 3-bedroom 2-bath 1255-square foot home. The job included a completely new kitchen, removal of a wall, a to-the-studs remodel of both baths, new flooring, drywall resurfacing, raising a dropped hallway floor, and new doors, door trim, and hardware throughout. The beginning of the job happened during a difficult time, namely in February 2020. Because of the lockdown, communication especially early in the job was somewhat spotty, and not all design decisions were discussed. However, the designer, Michelle, might as well have read my mind, as she made choices that very much reflected my own taste. In the end, I could not be more pleased with the workmanship and the overall look of the final result. Even though the job ended up taking much longer than anticipated, it was worth the wait. I feel lucky every time I come home.

We hired Heartwood Residential to remodel an existing two-story home. From the beginning to end, Heartwood Residential was a pleasure to work with. Our initial meeting was thoughtful and confidence inducing, their proposal was by far the most complete we received, and Nick was very responsive as we finalized the plan and contract. Once construction started, their crew worked diligently and kept a very clean construction zone. In the end, the quality of construction is incredible, and we are very happy with all of their work. Scope of work included replacing a 1st story load-bearing shear-wall with a moment frame, adding a large covered porch, new windows throughout, complete kitchen remodel (cabinets, granite, bead board ceiling, appliances etc.), matching existing hardwood floors with new (incl refinishing), base boards / door casings and adding a large structural steel garden window amongst other elements. Several of these improvements were quite complicated and required adding shear-wall, underpinning the foundation etc. Heartwood Residential took the worry out of what can typically be a very stressful process. I would absolutely recommend Heartwood Residential for any project you may be considering. Wouldn’t hire anyone else!

Heartwood Residential remodeled our kitchen in 2016 and added a second story to our home in 2020. Both projects stayed on budget and the craftsmanship on both was excellent. Our expectations were exceeded when we saw the final product. It is also worth mentioning when we added our second story, we also had new windows and insulation installed throughout. On hot days we can get away without turning on our A/C as our house does an amazing job of staying cool on its own. We recommend Heartwood for any home remodeling needs.

A few weeks ago, my husband and I had the true pleasure of meeting Nick, founder and president of Heartwood Residential. Nick and his entire team were professional, courteous, and positive throughout our entire remodel process. Nick was always prompt in getting back to me about any questions I had about the process or the installation timeline. We sat down before the kitchen project started and discussed the overview and price. He let me know who was going to be in the house and when each step was to be finished. Everyone who worked on our two projects met and exceeded our expectations not only in their detailed and meticulous craftmanship, but in their friendly demeanor and work ethic. I was skeptical that we would finish the project on time, but Heartwood design delivered. Not only was the workmanship exceptional, but they had our kitchen ready to use within the timeline we discussed, which seemed like a miracle. We absolutely love our kitchen and it is better than I even imagined it would turn out. We would absolutely use them again if we were to remodel another part of our house. Nick redid our master bedroom his staff was very good and did a great job if I had a question they answer it .Nick check in either by phone or drop by to be sure all was going well.Will use him again for next job.

We hired Heartwood Residential for a fireplace & bathroom remodel, and a few things in our master bedroom. Nick & Michelle are a delight to work with/respond quickly, and are very knowledgeable. Their communication is the best I have seen. They are efficient, friendly, & responsive. Nick made suggestions on additional items, which we had done. Michelle provided assistance on décor, fixture choices, paint, etc. and very helpful to me. All of their subcontractors were very reliable, took pride in their work, & perfectionists. Any issues needing attention were resolved quickly, with Nick always keeping me informed. They were able to meet our completion deadline. We are 100% satisfied with our project and they are highly recommended!

Nick at Heartwood Residential provided us with a thorough and detailed quote for our project which consisted of adding a wrap around porch with metal seamed roof to our home, as well as adding on a deck and replacing awnings with corbels. They did an excellent job in all aspects. Nick is a great communicator and his attention to detail was excellent. I would highly recommend Heartwood Residential for any construction remodel project. We hired Heartwood Residential in early 2016 to remodel our kitchen, refinish our floors and paint our house's interior. The kitchen remodel was completely down to the studs, and included removing a load bearing wall. Nick and Michelle of Heartwood Residential made this a wonderful process from the start. Their 'Design + Build' approach benefited us greatly. At the onset we presented them with our concept, and they made it better by adding their own ideas and vision to our's. Their communication is excellent; quick to respond and they address the issue at hand. What impressed us the most however was their diligence. After hearing many horror stories from friends of contractors who show up to work intermittently, we were pleased with Heartwood's diligence on our project. From beginning to end, only a small handful of days went by when they were not at our house completing our project. Both Nick and Michelle, their crew and their sub contractors were friendly, and pleasant to work with. In the end, this all added to a finished result that exceeded our expectations, and a process that was easy and well facilitated. We are planning on hiring Heartwood again for our next home project, and we highly recommend them to anyone.

Finding a quality contractor who is reliable and easy to work with can be a challenge. Nick and Michelle from Heartwood Residential were referred to us by our wood-worker, and the whole process of working with them has been a breeze! We remodeled a bathroom (a complete gut job for a 1950s bathroom that had never been touched!), and had Nick finish some leftover detail work from our kitchen remodel that had been left undone by a previous contractor. From scheduling and paperwork, to the actual construction, Nick and Michelle were quick, thorough, and pleasant to work with. We are so happy with the final result and would hire Heartwood Residential again in a heartbeat! Thanks again, Nick and Michelle!

We moved about a year ago to a 30 year old home near Santa Cruz. With no connections in the area with contractors we turned to Yelp and Angie's list. Of the contractors who were willing to even bid for our remodel, Nick of Heartwood Residential came in the lowest bid. His start date was on time, and he and the subcontractors worked around three dogs and three cats with good humor. We ran into some problems( a previous remodel undisclosed from the former owners and a fire in the wall), which were seen to quickly and efficiently ( with extra money). Our upstairs is completely remodeled ( two baths, and two closets added). He also dealt with other home repairs from the poor maintenance of the former owners. Billing was efficient and clear through the project, despite the change orders. I would highly recommend him and we still plan to use him to remodel our kitchen and downstairs bath.

I have many good things to say about working with Heartwood Residential. They have worked on a few of the jobs I've designed and have impressed my clients and myself with their professionalism, good work ethics, and respectfulness of people's homes during the remodeling process. Nick is a very organized, talented, and thoughtful contractor. He also is very selective with his sub-contractors. Michelle, Nick's wife, is amazing at working with customers in making design decisions. She has a great design sense and is patient with customers needing extra help. Both Nick and Michelle are great in communication: professionally written contracts, organized in placing orders, and promptly return phone calls & e-mail. Heartwood Residential gutted and rebuilt master bath, removed glass walls and doorways in second floor loft, extended second floor loft by 2 feet, redid the affected kitchen ceiling plaster underneath including new lighting, installed railing at edge of loft, filled in openings in walls in bedroom, plastered, installed new lighting, painting and carpeting. The quality of Nick Yegge's work is terrific and everyone who works for him is top-notch. All sub-contractors he hired were excellent too. We had a unique experience, I think, because this house was built on stilts on the ocean bluff 45 years ago with an unusual architecture. There were surprises at every turn. Nick was always honest about what he discovered and we disused how to approach the new problems as they arose. Nick always found a good solution. Santa Cruz County permitting was also a challenge but Nick would not take no for an answer and even hired an engineer to prove that what he was proposing to do was not only feasible but that it would improve the integrity of the structure of the second floor loft. Throughout the project Nick was always good about keeping in contact and workers always arrived when he said they would. I cannot say enough about the quality of the work. And the results are absolutely beautiful!
