16 Crafty Ways With Creative Spaces
Get ideas for keeping your studio or workspace organized and inspiring
Whether you're starting a handmade cottage industry, want a better place for sewing and knitting supplies, or dream of a dedicated place to do your holiday wrapping, you may need some inspiration for organizing your space. Here's a group of some favorite creative workrooms and storage closets full of ideas to get you started.
Use boxes and trays to keep things neat. Designer Betsy Burnham's studio stays organized via shelves full of white boxes and a series of functional trayscapes.
Make the most of a large laundry room. This space by Martha O'Hara interiors combines an office, laundry room and craft room. O'Hara custom designed the wrapping center rods and racks for this space, which she dubs "Practical Magic."
Have a designer create a system to meet your needs. Here's a closer look at how well organized the ribbons and papers are.
Have fun with color. One of my favorite color combinations is yellow, black and white, and designer Michelle Hinckley has maximized on that taxicab palette in this room. Her use of symmetry keeps things balanced and pleasing to the eye.
Lots of us have searched high and low for reasonably-priced organizing boxes and magazine holders and have found the best bargains are from IKEA. Warning: You're going to shred your fingertips on those little metal label tabs when you're putting them together, but they are worth it.

Use a combination of storage solutions. Flat files, cabinets and open shelving help Etsy artist and blogger Lockette keep her supplies organized.
Take over a large closet. This walk-in closet in an idea house was tricked out with rods for wrapping papers, hanging space for fabrics, and baskets for corralling craft supplies. The adjacent craft room stays neat and organized thanks to this closet.
Take over a not-so-large closet. I know most of us don't have the luxury of a walk-in we can dedicate to crafts, much less an entire craft room. If this is the case, consider transforming a two door closet into a craft space. This is a good use of a guest room closet. (See how this designer created her circle-inspired wall stencil.)

Perk up the background. Reinvigorate your supply storage with fun wallpaper or paint like this light aqua inside Vivian's craft closet.

Consider a pegboard system. Borrow the pegboard idea from the garage workbench to hang organizational containers and rods. Paint it an inspiring color; this one is painted "Lakeshore" by Sherwin-Williams.
Learn from a kitchen layout. An island in an art studio or craft room can function much like it does in a kitchen. It provides an extra work surface, drawers for tools and even flat files and/or slots for paintings and drawings. Its location in the center of everything improves efficiency.
Use space all the way down to the floor for storage. If an island is a pipe dream, baskets and boxes on the floor next to your desk can help you keep rolled-up plans, sketches and papers handy.
Take over a guest room. Designer Jeanette Van Wicklen is lucky enough to have a guest house on her property. She turned one large, light and bright room into her design studio.

Make the most of natural light. This studio is where artist Tjasa Owen makes the magic happen. Wall space, natural light and easels are important elements for a painter's workspace.

Take over the attic. If you have extra space in your attic and need a home studio, consider renovating it. Dormer windows and/or skylights can be added to let in the natural light.
