Five-Panel Doors Unlock Style
From Arts and Crafts to contemporary homes, five-panel doors add architectural interest with their classic design
When my husband and I purchased our 90-year-old Craftsman fixer-upper, we made a vow to restore it to its former glory. Unfortunately, our home has luan doors throughout. It's our goal to replace them all, one at a time.
The five-panel horizontal doors that originally graced our door frames soon will fill them all again. Their streamlined, classic design adds the rich architectural detailing originally intended for our bungalow. With five equally sized panels, the design can be streamlined and modern or reminiscent of its Victorian roots.

While all the doors in my home will be painted white, there's something inherently beautiful about natural wood. Here, the horizontal panels show off the grain.

Not to be taken too seriously, a five paneler can work wonderfully in kids' quarters.

These flat, painted panels pop against the stormy blue wall and reclaimed pine flooring. Painted poplar doors give a crisp, contemporary feel.
Installed as French doors, these pack an extra punch. Double the panels, double the pleasure!
Contrasting hardware on a five-panel door really stands out. This juxtaposition between the stark white palette and bronzed hardware is a breath of fresh air.
Here, painted, raised panels float within the frame of the door rather than being glued. This approach allows for expansion and contraction of the five panels.
