Great article! Pool renovations can make a dated pool spectacular again for sure. Having done a lot of major renovations, the dollars can start to add up quickly. As with any renovation (vs build new) sometimes its more expensive than a new pool depending on what all is being done and what the ultimate goal is. Outdoor living is so popular now it usually encompasses more than just the pool. Do homework on contractors...as always, it should be someone who is a licensed GC and familiar with the whole project to pull it all together. Often we find great concepts from architects but they generally have little knowledge as to the costs associated with pool renovation (or new) especially when adding bells/whistles and features.

Seoane Landscape Design

Awesome article! We do a handful of concrete/gunite pool renovations each year and the transformation is amazing. Lots of clients call us out for a consultation thinking that they will have to install a new pool and find out that they can rehab what they already have and turn it into the backyard oasis that they've always wanted.

@Seoane and Vue Custom Pools - do you use concrete/gunite, or fiberglass? I have an old pool and jacuzzi (needs to be totally redone), cracked concrete decking (and broken skimmers). I've been contemplating ripping out the entire pool and starting again, but there might be hope. What is your experience with fiberglass? Supposedly easier to maintain, clean, etc....
