I grew up in NY on the upper east side of Manhattan. We lived in a railroad apartment that belonged to my mother’s family. The entry door, in the kitchen, had a transom, there was a long, thin pole with a hook on the end. The window had a fixture in the middle of the frame where the hook was inserted to open and close the window. The pole hung on the wall next to the door, so that it was always handy.

Robin, I love memories like what you just described. To think that a transom window could lend us that wonderful feeling of well...whatever is wonderful about living day-to-day...
