Inspiration for a large transitional dark wood floor eat-in kitchen remodel in Chicago with a single-bowl sink, recessed-panel cabinets, white cabinets, marble countertops, white backsplash, subway tile backsplash, stainless steel appliances and an island

All That and Then Some - Naperville Kitchen

Free ebook, Creating the Ideal Kitchen. DOWNLOAD NOW   Our clients and their three teenage kids had outgrown the footprint of their existing home and felt they needed some space to spread out. They came in with a couple of sets of drawings from different architects that were not quite what they were looking for, so we set out to really listen and try to provide a design that would meet their objectives given what the space could offer. We started by agreeing that a bump out was the best way to go and then decided on the size and the floor plan locations of the mudroom, powder room and butler pantry which were all part of the project. We also planned for an eat-in banquette that is neatly tucked into the corner and surrounded by windows providing a lovely spot for daily meals. The kitchen itself is L-shaped with the refrigerator and range along one wall, and the new sink along the exterior wall with a large window overlooking the backyard. A large island, with seating for five, houses a prep sink and microwave. A new opening space between the kitchen and dining room includes a butler pantry/bar in one section and a large kitchen pantry in the other. Through the door to the left of the main sink is access to the new mudroom and powder room and existing attached garage. White inset cabinets, quartzite countertops, subway tile and nickel accents provide a traditional feel. The gray island is a needed contrast to the dark wood flooring. Last but not least, professional appliances provide the tools of the trade needed to make this one hardworking kitchen. What tile is the backsplash? I have White dove cabinets and I am looking for a white backsplash that will work/match nicely. This is gorgeous.

Beautiful kitchen! Would you mind sharing what tiles you used. I’m having a hard time finding a tile to match white dove. Thank you so much!

  • PRO

Sorry, we are in Chicago, so I'm not familiar with any material availability on the West Coast. The best thing to do would be to call around to different stone yards and/or take in these photos to see if you can find it. Good luck!

Not so much a trend as an option. Iridescent glass tiles have been around since I started designing kitchens over 10 years' ago. These are not iridescent tiles, they are just white subway tiles.

Hi there. Natural stone is not manufactured, it is quarried from the mountains. Different stone distributors import the stone and name it. Sometimes the same stone has different names, which can make it difficult to find regionally. Best way to find what you are looking for is to visit local stoneyards with these photos and ask to look at similar quartzite materials. Good luck!

I would refer to the specifications for your range top for that information as specifications vary by make and model. The subway tile was provided by the owner and is not beveled. Check Adex or Daltile for similar.

Thank you! I start with the element that is most important to my client and build from there; for one person this might be a decorative tile, for someone else it could be a slab of countertop material or that their non-negotiable is white cabinetry. It really just depends.

I've never hung a pendant light above a range as this is typically where the ventilation is located. Each manufacturer has specifications that dictate the height to flammable material, so I'd probably check those! Good luck!

Katie, I would recommend taking the photos and material name to a local stone yard and they should be able to help you source it or something similar.

Thanks for your question. I would allow a minimum of 42" from countertop to countertop in work aisles, more if you have multiple cooks. That is what we did here.

The backsplash tile was not in my scope of work, but looks like a simple 3x6 white subway. Try Adex tile for some similar ideas.

Thanks for the question. The homeowner chose the color so I'm not sure, but Benjamin Moore's Gray Owl would be a great choice.

This is quartzite, not quartz. It is more durable than marble but not quite as durable as granite or quartz.

It's Flint by Benjamin Moore. I agree that it's not clear on the tag.

Would be easier for the designer to just wrote "Flint by Benjamin Moore"

It’s not Benjamin Moore, it’s a custom color by the cabinet manufacturer Woodharbor. I believe this is exactly how it is tagged.

I don’t remember exactly what the corner radius on these tops was but we typically specify 1/4”. And yes square polished edge.
