Ann Kenkel Interiors Russell Hirshon Photography Coastal Estate in St. Michael's Maryland on the Chesapeake Bay. House was designed after the original 1770's house on the property. Home was designed to be a formal house but was now being used as a weekend retreat. Ann Kenkel had to decorate the house in a manner which was coastal enough so owner's felt like they were on vacation yet formal enough for the style of the house. AK found the house filled with wallpaper from the 1980's. Wallpaper from every room was removed and all trim had to be painted a neutral color. The formal dining room only had one entry. AK opened up a second entry into the dining room which provided a view of the Chesapeake Bay. Inspiration for a modern house exterior remodel in Los Angeles

A comprehensive master plan for this property brought fresh vision to a time worn landscape surrounding this vintage home. Evolved through numerous iterations, the plan addressed the complexities of the site to achieve the objectives of the new owners. The property is located at the end of a cul-de-sac where a refurbished gate opens to a new gravel driveway and auto court welcoming family and friends. An expanded entrance terrace directs visitors to the front door while passing a quietly flowing fountain backdropped by lush landscape plantings. The expansive main terrace along the back of the home was redesigned at a single contiguous level. A new pool, spa and cold plunge were placed parallel to the main terrace allowing a generous lawn to bring continuity to the property. A guest house was sited to take advantage of views across the landscape with access through an adjacent olive tree shaded dining area. A detached garage with carport was tucked into the site providing buffer of a sport court and chicken coop. A hedged garden added at the kitchen wing of the home adds privacy to the side entrance and a place for kitchen gardening in a raised steel bed. Trees, hedges, shrubs, perennials, and lawns were planned to meld with desirable aspects of the former landscape.

This beachfront home is along a main road, so the homeowner wanted to combine her love of the city of New Orleans with her desire to create an intimate space at the front of her home. This courtyard features authentic touches such as a functional City of New Orleans manhole cover, decorative City of New Orleans water meter covers, and wall sconces from Bevolo Gas & Electric Lights. A custom pelican tile mosaic, pelican statue, and sailboat water feature bring a nautical element to the space. An awkward, unusable planter was creatively converted to give the appearance of a basement level apartment by adding a custom iron gate, brick steps to a wooden door, and a back lit stained glass window. A custom cypress pergola frames the patio space directly off of the master bedroom. Raised planters provide a space not only for visual interest, but also edibles and soft lighting.
