Located in Central Oregon’s Black Butte Ranch, this house is a refined take on lodge-style architecture and was designed by JHL from the ground up. The heart of the home is a beautiful stone fireplace which reaches up to the wood-covered ceiling. Large windows look into the surrounding forest. The JHL team balanced the home’s soaring scale with cozier elements, like built-in window seats flanking the hearth, handmade rugs and warm lighting.

Majestic entry with high ceilings, transom over beautiful natural mahogany front door and extra set of windows above. Lots of light and "wow" factor here. Love the poplar buttboard walls and the reclaimed European white oak hardwood flooring - great details for this entry into a beautiful Southern Lowcountry custom home!

Love the detail with the wood banister and tread against the white crown molding for this staircase going to the bonus room from the owner's foyer. Hidden away from guests, this is a great look. You can get a good look at the Judge's Paneling seen here too - which makes a lovely wall.

The family room opens up from the kitchen and then again onto the back, screened in porch for an open floor plan that makes a cottage home seem wide open. The gray walls with transom windows and white trim are soothing; the brick fireplace with white surround is a stunning focal point. The hardwood floors set off the room. And then we have the ceiling - wow, what a ceiling - washed butt board and coffered. What a great gathering place for family and friends.

Ah, what a tub...a great old fashioned soaking tub...with claw feet no less! The butt board, made from poplar, reinforces the old-fashioned, but luxurious feel of the tub.

Owner's Foyer with staircase leading to bonus room, with kitchenette and built-in bunk bed. The attention to detail, seen throughout the home, is evident in this owner's entryway too, with the poplar butt board walls, the hardwood tread and railings for the staircase, alabaster crown molding and baseboards and the brick flooring set in a herringbone pattern.

This open room with plenty of windows and light can be used as a study, office or guest room. Love the accents of the poplar butt board wall, crown molding, intellectual gray walls against the gorgeous reclaimed hardwood flooring.

This adorable beach cottage is in the heart of the village of La Jolla in San Diego. The goals were to brighten up the space and be the perfect beach get-away for the client whose permanent residence is in Arizona. Some of the ways we achieved the goals was to place an extra high custom board and batten in the great room and by refinishing the kitchen cabinets (which were in excellent shape) white. We created interest through extreme proportions and contrast. Though there are a lot of white elements, they are all offset by a smaller portion of very dark elements. We also played with texture and pattern through wallpaper, natural reclaimed wood elements and rugs. This was all kept in balance by using a simplified color palate minimal layering. I am so grateful for this client as they were extremely trusting and open to ideas.
