Inspiration for a mid-sized modern backyard landscaping in Miami.

This project involved the renovation of the enclosed garden of an 1850s townhouse in old town Alexandria, VA. The idea was to modernize it and make it more functional. The design called for the installation of an Ipe deck and replacement of a brick patio with dry set flagstone. Simple bullet uplights accent clumping bamboo. To gain more usable space in this narrow landscape and update the hardscaping and overgrown garden, my design reconfigured the pathway with poured-in-place concrete pavers accented by Mexican pebbles and a stunning variety of succulents and other site-appropriate plantings that thrive in shade and part sun. We removed the tree to create a patio area large enough to fit a table and chairs for a small group. Non-invasive/clumping Bamboo was added to help screen the patio and provide privacy. Other shade to part-shade plants were included that provide a variety of textures and colors throughout the seasons. Low-voltage lighting was installed for safety and ambiance. the bamboo is a clumping variety called Bambusa eutuldoides viridi-vittata , Asian lemon bamboo. This variety is a clumper and you do not need to contain it, however, do allow an 8'by 10' area for its ultimate growth. Bamboo does require constant maintenance and you will need to do some research for the specific variety you choose. We converted an underused back yard into a modern outdoor living space. Functions include a cedar soaking tub, outdoor shower, fire pit, and dining area. A bamboo screen was planted to soften a new privacy fence. To provide a dramatic effect, up lighting was installed.
