This sixth floor penthouse overlooks the city lakes, the Uptown retail district and the city skyline beyond. Designed for a young professional, the space is shaped by distinguishing the private and public realms through sculptural spatial gestures. Upon entry, a curved wall of white marble dust plaster pulls one into the space and delineates the boundary of the private master suite. The master bedroom space is screened from the entry by a translucent glass wall layered with a perforated veil creating optical dynamics and movement. This functions to privatize the master suite, while still allowing light to filter through the space to the entry. Suspended cabinet elements of Australian Walnut float opposite the curved white wall and Walnut floors lead one into the living room and kitchen spaces.
A custom perforated stainless steel shroud surrounds a spiral stair that leads to a roof deck and garden space above, creating a daylit lantern within the center of the space. The concept for the stair began with the metaphor of water as a connection to the chain of city lakes. An image of water was abstracted into a series of pixels that were translated into a series of varying perforations, creating a dynamic pattern cut out of curved stainless steel panels. The result creates a sensory exciting path of movement and light, allowing the user to move up and down through dramatic shadow patterns that change with the position of the sun, transforming the light within the space.
The kitchen is composed of Cherry and translucent glass cabinets with stainless steel shelves and countertops creating a progressive, modern backdrop to the interior edge of the living space. The powder room draws light through translucent glass, nestled behind the kitchen. Lines of light within, and suspended from the ceiling extend through the space toward the glass perimeter, defining a graphic counterpoint to the natural light from the perimeter full height glass.
Within the master suite a freestanding Burlington stone bathroom mass creates solidity and privacy while separating the bedroom area from the bath and dressing spaces. The curved wall creates a walk-in dressing space as a fine boutique within the suite. The suspended screen acts as art within the master bedroom while filtering the light from the full height windows which open to the city beyond.
The guest suite and office is located behind the pale blue wall of the kitchen through a sliding translucent glass panel. Natural light reaches the interior spaces of the dressing room and bath over partial height walls and clerestory glass.

This master bathroom was completely gutted from the original space and enlarged by modifying the entry way. The bay window area was opened up with the use of free standing bath from Kohler. This allowed for a tall furniture style linen cabinet to be added near the entry for additional storage. The his and hers vanities are seperated by a beautiful mullioned glass cabinet and each person has a unique space with their own arched cubby lined in a gorgeous mosaic tile. The room was designed around a pillowed Elon Durango Limestone wainscot surrounding the space with an Emperado Dark 16x16 Limestone floor and slab countertops. The cabinetry was custom made locally to a specified finish.

The master bathroom is elongated to accommodate a walk-in shower and a more modern design to fit the vintage of their home.
A St. Louis County mid-century modern ranch home from 1958 had a long hallway to reach 4 bedrooms. With some of the children gone, the owners longed for an enlarged master suite with a larger bathroom.
By using the space of an unused bedroom, the floorplan was rearranged to create a larger master bathroom, a generous walk-in closet and a sitting area within the master bedroom. Rearranging the space also created a vestibule outside their room with shelves for displaying art work.

We replaced double French doors in the ensuite bathroom entry with a solid wood single door, which provided much-needed privacy. The French doors were repurposed, now enclosing the enlarged linen closet. Tight shirred panels in a pink mini print cover the glass on the inside and match the window drapes, adding a soft element to the room
Borrowing space from the adjacent closet allowed more room for a large state-of-the-art angled spa-like shower with a large seat, shower head, body sprays, rain head, and personal shower.

This residence had been recently remodeled, with the exception of two of the bathrooms. Michael Merrill Design Studio enlarged the downstairs bathroom, which now has a spa-like atmosphere. It serves pool guests as well as house guests. Over-scaled tile floors and architectural glass tiled walls impart a dramatic modernity to the space. Note the polished stainless steel ledge in the shower niche. A German lacquered vanity and a Jack Lenor Larsen roman shade complete the space.
Upstairs, the bathroom has a much more organic feel, using a shaved pebble floor, linen textured vinyl wall covering, and a watery green wall tile. Here the vanity is veneered in a rich walnut. The residence, nestled on 20 acres of heavily wooded land, has been meticulously detailed throughout, with new millwork, hardware, and finishes. (2012-2013);

Hartley Hill Design
When our clients moved into their already built home they decided to live in it for a while before making any changes. Once they were settled they decided to hire us as their interior designers to renovate and redesign various spaces of their home. As they selected the spaces to be renovated they expressed a strong need for storage and customization. They allowed us to design every detail as well as oversee the entire construction process directing our team of skilled craftsmen. The home is a traditional home so it was important for us to retain some of the traditional elements while incorporating our clients style preferences.

Remodel of a two-story residence in the heart of South Austin. The entire first floor was opened up and the kitchen enlarged and upgraded to meet the demands of the homeowners who love to cook and entertain. The upstairs master bathroom was also completely renovated and features a large, luxurious walk-in shower.

There's quite a bit of cool gray tile in this bathroom, but the rich pecan-clad cabinets help to break it up and warm it up. The soft grayish-green walls add just a whisper of color without competing with the other elements. - tlaw3
