A white elegant paneling is counterpoint to rustic elements. Earthy and elemental materials are selected for the home that reference the barn without directly mimicking it. Wooden members found inside the barn and from other barns bridge ceilings and are used in floors along with rustic slate adding to a sense of simplicity to the farmhouse design.

This secret garden is actually called a “Mary Garden”. It is a sacred place for the religious homeowners as it is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Originally the plans called for a small chapel space in the home as one of the owner’s sons is a priest. When we were going in this direction we had it so the plumbing from the sink of the priests bathroom would actually filter through the plants so they would drink from the Holy Water left behind. I feel the whole idea of this space is very moving and spiritual. From the viewpoint of someone that didn’t know the history of the space though I’d imagine they’d fine it at the least a romantic space.

The front of the house features an open porch, a common feature in the neighborhood. Stairs leading up to it are tucked behind one of a pair of brick walls. The brick was installed with raked (recessed) horizontal joints which soften the overall scale of the walls. The clerestory windows topping the taller of the brick walls bring light into the foyer and a large closet without sacrificing privacy. The living room windows feature a slight tint which provides a greater sense of privacy during the day without having to draw the drapes. An overhang lined on its underside in stained cedar leads to the entry door which again is hidden by one of the brick walls.

Shaker style cabinetry with a modern flair. Painted cabinetry with the warmth of stained quartersawn oak accents and stainless steel drawer fronts. Thick two toned butcher block on the island makes a great focal point and the built in seating nook is very cozy. We also created some custom details for the family pets like hidden gates at the doorway and comfortable beds with screened doors.

Wood reclaimed from barns in upstate New York for the beams and cross-beams and Oklahoma flagstone brings a warm and rustic outdoor feel to this unique outdoor living space. This new addition complements the home as well as being reminiscent of the home owner’s Wisconsin house. Within you will discover a custom wood-fired pizza oven and outdoor fireplace built with the same stone. Completing this outdoor living space design, we included custom heaters and motorized retractable screens creating an enclosed patio so that the homeowners could enjoy their backyard year-round. Hidden within the archways, the screens are unnoticeable when the homeowners choose to enjoy the breeze. These screens can be installed on new structures, as well as retrofitted for pre-existing structures. One Specialty also constructed the retaining wall with archway, gate and fencing. A redwood driveway gate, a redwood privacy fence and a redwood screen frame this front-yard drought-tolerant landscape. The redwood driveway gate is automatic and framed with black-painted steel. The tall redwood privacy fence extends along the driveway which is large concrete pavers over DG-decomposed granite. The drought-tolerant design includes the DG, cactus succulents and gravel.

Custom wood gates are flanked by natural stone columns in a square-cut pattern with a rock face edge.
