A typical post-1906 Noe Valley house is simultaneously restored, expanded and redesigned to keep what works and rethink what doesn’t. The front façade, is scraped and painted a crisp monochrome white—it worked. The new asymmetrical gabled rear addition takes the place of a windowless dead end box that didn’t. A “Great kitchen”, open yet formally defined living and dining rooms, a generous master suite, and kid’s rooms with nooks and crannies, all make for a newly designed house that straddles old and new.

This amazing deck, covered structure and paver patio transformed this Sparta, NJ yard. The rich warm color of the tiger wood ceiling flows seamlessly with the custom ipe columns with stacked stone bases, capped with blue stone. The WOLF PVC decking in rose wood and amber wood and custom aluminum railing not only adds charm, but has the added benefit of being low maintenance. The addition of a custom ceiling fan, as well as heating units, allows these homeowners to enjoy this “room” virtually year round.
Stepping down to the lower deck, you find the inviting hot tub, a lounging area for enjoying the sun and custom stacked stone planter boxes finished with blue stone, ready to explode with colors each season.
Three steps down brings you to the custom designed paver patio, built in curved seating compliment the curved design of the patio and unique fire feature. The attention to detail is evident everywhere you look.

During excavation for this new modern home, large granite boulders rose to the surface from the primordial hillside. Instead of displacing these monoliths from the site from which they were created, they were arranged to define space. A circle of boulders stand guard around a custom built fire pit, providing protection from the wind while offering a place to climb or sit. The extended landscape view from the lawn is kept intact by the introduction of a ha-ha, a traditional landscape feature, that hides the productive garden and keeps it from breaking the view. Native and drought tolerant plantings hug the outer edges of the property for minimal use of irrigation and to visually blend into the surrounding hillside. This project also features a custom ipe bench with integrated lighting, waterjet address numbers with night lighting, and hardscape that complements the form and materiality of the architecture to create a harmonious transition into the horizontal plane.

The front of the home is terraced by the use of steel retainers, and an Ipe boardwalk complements the entry transitioning two sets of cantilevered concrete steps. A river birch tree perches at its terminus. Ascending the front walkway, visitors are greeted by textural plantings that interplay with sunlight harmonizing the natural materials utilized on the home’s exterior.
