Whether you use your backyard for pool parties or cultivating a vegetable patch, having a beautiful outdoor space to retreat to can make all the difference. During your search for backyard ideas, consider the size of your outdoor space and the features that matter most to you. From gorgeous patios to mood-setting fire pits, you can browse thousands of backyard photos below.

1. Play to Your Backyard’s Size

When designing your backyard, it’s key to keep the size and shape of the space in mind. Small backyards can be made into intimate retreats, while more expansive spaces can benefit from varied landscaping. Good lighting is essential in small spaces, so you might consider adding string lights or a statement fixture. If you’ve got extra room, be creative with your landscaping and install a pool or garden pond in one section, and a shaded patio in another.

2. Pick the Features that Make You Happiest

While you plan your outdoor space, consider your lifestyle and how you envision using it: A backyard with a fire pit can be great for casually spending time with friends or family — even when it’s a bit chilly. On the other hand, a blossoming garden would be beautiful, and a lot of fun if you’ve got a green thumb.

3. Lawn or Patio — Or Both?

One of the biggest decisions you’ll have to make is whether you want a patio or an unpaved area. Having a grassy lawn is a great idea for kids, as they’ll be able to run and play comfortably. If you’d prefer to entertain, a stylish patio with tables and chairs is ideal. Pro-tip: if you’re looking for backyard ideas on a budget, consider using pea gravel instead of pavers, which is easier to install and boasts more of a natural look.
