The Historic Home lies at the heart of Michael Carter’s passion for interior design. Well versed in the academics of period architecture and antiques, Carter continues to be called on to bring fresh and inspiring ideas to historic properties that are undergoing restoration or redecoration. It is never the goal to have these homes feel like museums. Instead, Carter & Company strives to blend the function of contemporary life with design ideas that are appropriate – they respect the past in a way that is stylish, timeless and elegant.

We provided the design for this bedroom to library conversion. By opening up the ceiling and going into the unused attic space, we were able to create floor to ceiling library shelving that finally housed this academic's literary collection. Original transom windows in the attach as well as three floor level windows let in lots of natural light for working and reading.

A little personal space is important as kids are learning to balance academics and a daily routine. A study desk that masquerades as a make-up vanity gives her a quiet place to write an essay and adequate space to store her get-ready essentials.

An academic couple, a renown materials scientist and a respected artist, wanted an outdoor space for entertainment and contemplation in their elegantly designed garden. We determined during the initial meeting that the design goal was “…to give them a reason to use the garden.” After several iterations, we developed the new space as an extension of the existing deck, creating a framed, optimal view of the garden and landscape that was previously de-emphasized. The pavilion can serve both as a stand-alone insect-protected space for a small group, or a covered deck expansion for larger gatherings.
The repetition of patterns is a theme throughout the space. The corrugated white metal exterior is conceived as a textural complement to the pale horizontal face brick of the adjacent ranch house. The decking planks become the floor of the pavilion. Wall and ceiling panels align with lights and fixtures. Temporal patterns result from rainwater channelled across the correlated roof surface, as well as scalloped shadows cast onto the deck and wall surfaces. The “light chimney” to the North reflects the house fireplace chimney to the South, and draws south light into the pavilion serving area. All of the pavilion's openings are carefully arranged to frame the existing plant compositions.
Since completion, the clients have entertained extensively in the pavilion. It has also become a favorite place for morning coffee, writing, and contemplation, thus fulfilling the initial goal of the project.

An academic exercise that yielded a very multi-usable result. One of the really cool things about this space is that it has unhindered views from the inside because there is no reflection off the inside of the glass but it is very hard to see in to it because of the reflections on the outside of the glass. There is a two story shower (like a warm waterfall that beats down on you) in the right rear corner, my wife does not even see me using it when she comes home. I use it at the end of the day so i don't have to squeegee the glass shower walls of our bathroom shower - and it feels great.

Over the years, my jobs have involved collaborating with homeowners, business owners, architects and contractors analyzing and designing plans for new construction and remodels, renovating kitchens, designing fireplaces, cabinetry, lighting, window treatments and furnishings.
But even more important than the design, I believe the ability to communicate all the ideas and concepts of the design to the various trades people involved is critical to achieving the end results my clients and I envision.
My 35 years in the business as well as my academic background in design have given me the ability to confidently provide this service. Give me a call, I'd love to hear from you and discuss your project.

This bogoda style shelving unit is both formal and globally-inspired, another way we established continuity between rooms.

Nestled in the front corner of the home, overlooking the front drive and the rose garden, this study library is a cozy academic retreat perfectly suited for the family’s love of books and learning. Originally the dining room, the space was artfully transformed into a study, with new cabinetry crafted to complement the home’s original mahogany millwork for a unifying, historical touch.
Custom library built-ins wrap around the room, beautifully detailed with reeded edges and crown molding. A new mahogany window reinforces the period style, while a window seat with a plush velvet cushion provides the perfect nook to curl up with a favorite book, a blanket, and a cup of tea or coffee. The shelf above the window was designed to perfectly accommodate and showcase the family’s set of Harvard Classics.
The room is color-drenched in a rich forest green, creating a moody, enveloping atmosphere, while leather club chairs and a family heirloom desk furnish the space with elegance and character. The original servery door, connecting the former dining room to the home’s office, was retained, maintaining a link to the home’s history and layout.
This study library is both a functional workspace and a refined retreat—a place for reading, reflection, and quiet moments.
