Winter has arrived and this means many months of snow and ice are ahead. When trees shed their leaves and go dormant for the winter, this is like how bears hibernate; they are both sleeping through the cold and waiting until the warm spring weather comes back. But unlike hibernating bears, who are safe and snuggled up in a warm cave somewhere, trees are left to withstand the harsh, cold elements throughout the entire winter. This means that they are more impacted than you might believe.
It is easier for mature trees to be able to handle the long winter months due to their extensive root system and thick bark. But saplings and other newly planted trees are not yet fully equipped with these natural defenses to handle the cold. No matter if you have new or older trees, following our tips will help them prosper during the cold Canadian winter ahead. Our team at Five Star Tree Services has come up with some winter maintenance essentials for your trees that will give them an extra hand over the winter.
One Last Water
Getting one last good watering in before the ground freezes is helpful to newly planted and young trees. Always make sure to water your tree slowly and gently. This allows the water to seep down into the root system as opposed to it running off the top and freezing.
Apply Mulch
When you use mulch, it acts like a barrier between the tree roots and the cold snow, it helps to insulate it. When you are applying mulch, make sure you spread it around the base of the tree so that it is no more than 3 inches deep. You also need to make sure to spread the mulch all the way to the drip line surrounding the tree. Make sure to not exceed 3 inches around your entire tree and keep the mulch away from the trunk of the tree.
Wrap Tree Trunks
There is a condition called sunscalding that can occur during the winter months. This happens when there is a temperature change that happens quickly. You might notice it when the sun warms the trees, which thaws the bark but during the night, when it gets cold again, it causes the melted water in the bark to rupture, causing cracks in the tree’s trunk. Young trees are especially susceptible to this happening. To help stop this from happening, it is best to wrap your trees with tree wraps or a plastic guard. It is advisable to wrap the trunk from the ground up and stop just below the first branch.
Shelter Your Trees
Young or newly planted trees are fairly defenseless for the first handful of years. Older and more mature trees have had time to develop a strong root system and hardy bark that help to protect them against things like animals and the freezing cold. If you want to help your little sapling along this winter, you can build a shelter that can handle having snow piled on it. You can also periodically use a broom to brush off the snow that accumulates on a tree’s branches. But try to avoid breaking off any ice that has formed on the branches, as this can actually end up hurting the tree if you accidentally break one of its branches instead.
Keep Road Salt Away
It’s no big secret that the use of road salt is detrimental to trees. When it gets on them, the end result come springtime is a dead tree, or at least, a severely damaged one. As much as you can, protect your trees and limit their exposure to salt over the winter.
Protect Your Trees
Winter is not only limiting for trees, but for a lot of other animals as well. This includes rabbits, mice, moles, squirrels, and other furry little creatures, who like to use trees as a food source during the summer months. During the winter, this food is now cut off when the trees go dormant. This only leaves the tree’s bark as an alternative food source for these critters. They seem to especially like young tree bark to chew on over the winter. In order to stop this from happening, you need to protect the bark with things like a fence surrounding your tree, wrapping the trunk with a plastic guard or hardware cloth.
Winter Pruning
The best time to prune any tree is during the winter months when the tree is dormant. Pruning allows you to rid the tree of any excess branches and control disease. Winter pruning is highly beneficial and lets your tree improve branch development in the spring.
Don’t Use
Always make sure to avoid products that are known to hurt trees, especially ones containing sodium chloride. Products like that cause negative reactions in trees or any plants, as it hinders their water intake. Instead, look for products that have potassium, calcium, and magnesium chloride.

Protects against allergens, dust mites, bacteria, perspiration, urine and fluids SafeRest Classic Plus Mattress Protectors offer protection against dust mites, fluids, urine, perspiration and allergens making them especially helpful for those with kids, pets, allergies or incontinence. As we sleep we shed thousands of dead skin cells, which can quickly accumulate providing an ideal environment for dust mites to thrive. SafeRest mattress protectors trap dust mites, allergens and skin cells on the surface of the protector where they can be easily washed away during suggested quarterly launderings. This helps provide a cleaner more allergen free sleep environment for you and your family. Breathable and Cool The surface material is made with ultra thin polyester knit back coated with a breathable, hypoallergenic and 100% waterproof membrane layer. Ultra thin knitted polyester also provides a smooth surface that stretches and contours with the body providing an undetectable layer of protection. Fitted Sheet Style To ensure a great fit, an elastic band is used on the side skirt to automatically pull excess material under the mattress. Machine Washable Machine-wash with your sheets using normal household detergents that do not contain bleach. Tumble dry on low heat. Do not iron. Our mattress protection products will not change the feel of your mattress once applied. This is great for those with any type of mattress including innerspring, latex or memory foam.

A simple entryway lets hand made sconces by artist David Wiseman shine. Decorating the table top is a delicate crystal 20 karat yellow gold hand painted Baccarat butterfly sculpture. A slim entry table by a local craftsperson provides space enough space for entry odds and ends, without allowing clutter to accumulate. David Wiseman geranium sconces are the first work of art you see when entering the home, and offer a moment of beauty and appreciation before continuing deeper into the house.

Initially devoid of a front garden, the space featured only a century-old arborvitae hedge on a sloped bed. Our transformation included the construction of a retaining wall with elegant columns, displaying a curated collection of handmade pots. A new hedge was introduced, housing Mediterranean trees like olive, bay, and guava. The courtyard and gravel garden bed, layered with decomposed granite, minimize mud accumulation. The addition of lighting and irrigation ensures both aesthetic appeal and the garden's overall health, creating a simple yet captivating oasis for the family and their neighbors to enjoy.

This built is at the end of a long room with a kitchen at the other end, a dining table in the middle and a desk nearby. This is a small 1600 ft house. Smart storage is needed. It made since to combine dining, and office storage because they share the same space. Shelves are notorious for looking untidy. Notice there is balanced open space and not tons of little objects. I started with what needed to be stored first, the printer and office supplies on the bottom shelf. If this built in was closer to the dining table I may have wanted to put everyday dishes on it. Things that would be easy to grab. Instead the easy to grab items came from the office. Behind the built-in door is a shredder. The deep drawers hold the ugly office and art supplies. I choose a small desk because the space is small and needed to be used as a walk through to the backyard. Also the larger the desk the more stuff that accumulates on it. A smaller surface is a natural system that encourages tidiness. The key is that is also needs to look good, so people honor it and usually take care of it. I call it creating a sacred space that demands respect. It really works, like magic. But only if everything has a place and if not something needs to go. Purging is powerful!

At the outset, this project began with the transformation of a 2-car attached garage. The goal was to create a mudroom, an exercise room, and a breezeway to seamlessly connect the spacious detached garage with the main part of the house. Additionally, the project involved partial roof removal and the addition of a new front entry.
But then came an unexpected twist – scope creep.
We found ourselves veering away from the initial client-supplied architectural plans. After numerous consultations with the clients and several iterations of the design, we arrived at a significantly improved plan for the remodel and addition.
Our journey commenced with the demolition of almost the entire former 2-car garage, making space for a new, oversized 3-car garage measuring 40′ x 28′. This garage was strategically placed between the existing house and the large detached garage. We introduced a custom low-sloped flat roof, designed to address historical drainage issues.
To mitigate water pooling, we created a custom concrete step at the back corner of the garage, equipped with a sturdy metal grate that sits flush with the step. We also installed a PVC drainage system, commencing at the step and running beneath a newly designed patio, ultimately draining into the yard. These measures have significantly reduced water accumulation around the house.
The new garage boasts several features, including Longboard aluminum siding, custom full glass garage doors, interior drywall finished to a level 4, an abundance of can lights, an epoxy floor coating, vinyl base trim, a new forced air garage heater, and more.
The clients also requested a designated space for their three kids and their friends to enjoy, thus giving birth to the “Kid Zone.” We partitioned a section of the existing oversized garage, resulting in a space measuring approximately 22′ x 32′, brimming with entertainment possibilities. To enhance control over the temperature in the Kid Zone, we collaborated with our licensed HVAC partner to install a cold weather mini-split system.
One of the most significant challenges was the modernization and consolidation of the home’s main electrical systems. We reconfigured and combined 6-7 different electrical panels into just two. One panel serves the main house, while the second is dedicated to backup power from a generator. These panels, along with the boiler for the in-floor heating system, are housed in a newly constructed mechanical room within the Kid Zone.
Inside the main house, we completed various tasks, such as removing the ceiling in the hallway from the new garage to address prior water damage, improve insulation, and rework electrical and HVAC systems. We also replaced the ceiling from the front door to the base of the stairs, adding new can lighting and enhancing insulation. Skilled drywall specialists then installed and finished new drywall to a level 5 standard.
The exterior of the house underwent a complete overhaul. Before installing new roofing on the entire house and garage, we modified an existing flat roof by adding custom lumber and plywood to enhance the pitch, preventing future ice dams. A new rubber roof was expertly installed on the oversized 3-car garage, and the flat roof section we re-framed.
Our meticulous exterior team removed old white aluminum soffit, fascia, and gutters, replacing them with new framing to accommodate Longboard soffit material. This task was particularly challenging due to the age of the house and the non-standard wall and roof framing. Our skilled exterior subcontractors ensured a perfect fit.
Near the pool area, we discovered severe rot and decay from years of water intrusion. After informing the homeowners, we ordered and installed five new commercial-style block framed windows and a custom 8′ high Anderson patio door. This involved careful removal and replacement of window headers from the outside to avoid disturbing the finished part of the house. We reframed the large openings to fit the new windows, and our skilled trim carpenters installed new walnut casing, base, and window sills.
In total, we replaced around 900 lineal feet of soffit and installed approximately 32 squares of aluminum siding. The entire house was meticulously prepped, repaired, and painted according to the client’s chosen color.
Throughout the project, we incorporated numerous custom touches and unique design elements, some of which you can see in the pictures. Our team also addressed various unforeseen challenges, from soil issues to rot and decay repair, roof leaks, drainage problems, electrical and HVAC complexities, and much more.
At Xpand Inc., we take pride in making it all happen, turning your remodeling and renovation dreams into reality.

The impact of temperature drop on the chimney can impact the structure and functionality of the chimney. As we have been experiencing in Chicago winters, temperatures have gone from 50 degrees down to 21 degrees during the day, with temperatures falling even further at night. What can you do as a homeowner to watch for, and when to bring in a certified technician from Superior Chimney.
External: Impact of Temperature Drop on the Chimney
Anytime there is a rapid temperature change, it causes the bricks, stones and mortar to expand and contract. These durable materials are still susceptible to thermal shock, especially when it gets wet from ice, rain or melting snow. Because of the drastic change in temperatures, this can cause hairline cracks to begin, and if it goes unnoticed, larger cracks in the masonry will form.
External: Freeze-Thaw Damage
Mortar, bricks and stones are porous materials, meaning that air and water enter the materials. Sometimes, it leaves or dries out, and other times it stays longer. When the temperatures drop below 32 degrees, any of the trapped water freezes and then expands. This can cause small cracks to start, deterioration of the mortar or spalling which is the flaking of the bricks to occur.
External: Ice Build Up on the Chimney Cap or Chimney Crown
When temperatures are 50 degrees and it rains, water accumulates everywhere, including the highest point on your house, the chimney. The chimney cap and chimney crown are always exposed to the harshest elements. When it rains and temperatures drop during the day or night, freezing occurs and can create ice buildup. This can cause the chimney crown to crack or the chimney cap to loosen.
Internal: Chimney Flue Lining
The temperature swing also affects the chimney flue liner. Some chimney flue liners are made from clay. These are especially susceptible to crack forming from the swing in temperatures. But what also happens whether you have a gas or wood burning fireplace is the formation of condensation which can occur when there is fast cooling after the fire in the fireplace is put out or turned off.
Bring out the Sun!
Well, yes, the sunshine melts the ice and snow, but when temperatures go down at night, what remains wet, will refreeze again. The repeated process places stress on the masonry, bricks and stone.
Chimney Inspections Work
A chimney inspection can help with both safety and preserving the structure of the chimney. When a chimney technician conducts an inspection, they will search for cracks in the bricks and mortar, any spalling or deterioration from the thermal shock and freeze thaw cycle. These areas will be marked for repairs if it gets any worse and before it becomes too expensive to repair.
We can’t forget the biggest intruder in the home: water. The chimney technician will also be checking for water leaks from the chimney flashing, the chimney crown, chimney cap or the efflorescence which is the white material that shows up on the chimney or fireplace.
These are just a couple of key areas that a chimney inspection completes. There are numerous other areas, and this can be found on Superior Chimney’s 14-point inspection guide.
Contact us today, and we’ll set you up for a chimney inspection with photo evidence so you have peace of mind with the safety and security of your home.

"Luna" features an impressive stainless steel track which is a milled groove within a nearly 4" wide rail. Teflon coated wheels glide quietly within the slot and serve as the stopper which eliminates the need for additional components and places for water to accumulate.
Bartels shower enclosures are custom manufactured to fit any configuration and size.

The living Room was a challenging room for client. This large room that was never used because it was a pass through room in the house. We were able to create two separate seating areas and still allow for a walkway.
They wanted to be able to hold large family gatherings in this space so we made sure to include plenty of seating (total seating for 12). We also incorporated wonderful keepsakes the client had accumulated from her world travels. The Persian rugs and the black carved storage chest became a perfect coffee table with a custom piece of glass cut to protect.
The vibrant color palette paired with the black accents makes a great statement in this home.

Leaves, twigs, and other solid materials can wreak havoc on your home’s gutter system. If left unchecked, they will accumulate and prevent rainwater from flowing through the gutter trough, causing rainwater to overflow and potentially damage the exterior of your home. For these reasons, Paul opted to have LeafGuard® Brand Gutters installed on this home. They're patented, one-piece and guaranteed never to clog.

Clean lines and open shelves don't always offer storage solutions. Clutter can really accumulate fast in a bathroom. In this space open shelves are paired with basket storage and drawers are accessible for each user. Rice paper glass adds interest while blocking clear sight to the cabinet's contents.
