Creating this open airy master retreat involved removing a space consuming corner W.C. and an awkwardly deep linen closet. Using tall glass panels to separate the shower and toilet gives privacy while maintaining the newly acquired spaciousness. The glass panels transition from frosted around the toilet to clear around the roomy barrier free shower. By reducing the original closet opening, we gained necessary wall space for a modern freestanding tub. Tall cabinets provide plenty of storage space for linens and toiletries. A pair of pull-out cabinets – one on each side of the sink – conceal convenient grooming stations. An extra wide sink can easily accommodate two and still leaves plenty of counterspace on either side. The large mirror is mounted to a shallow framework concealing recessed lighting and softly illuminating the wall behind. The faucets and hand-held shower feature a knurled detail lending a bit of biker industrial to the modern surroundings. An old home with good bones: we updated this tired facade from drab to an understated beauty with fresh paint and squared off, clad windows. New glass doors welcome visitors and generous porticoes make outdoor living a requirement.

" Crafts from different spaces and times blend in; it is favoured over monotonous pieces rolled out of a factory machine. " In master bedroom, the full height cabinets are lined with a handwoven silk upholstery, a mural depicting some Chinese cranes flapping about beneath a magnificent tree. The subtly goldish silk was woven in Thailand, in 3 by 2 metres, followed by three months of hand-brush paintings in Hangzhou, China. Black and whites are brushed against the finely sparkling canvas in a contemporary Chinese style. We mounted the master-piece into six wardrobe doors in nickel-silver frames,and adorn it with the chic metal door handles - acquired from the local antique shops in Lascar Row. The circular handles are made of hammered brass by craftsman, dangling a tassel in cords, and it reminds one of the ancient door handles in old China. This meticulous blend of details has created a glistening artwork, which fuses the crafts and flavours from different cities and time. The Owners approached their new project with the thought that it should be a quiet addition, have an appropriate scale, and use the same architectural language as the existing house. What the Owners wanted was a more functional family space for their older children and needed a large kitchen and back entry for this original Myers Park home. The new family room would need to include the antique wood paneling the Owners had acquired. The new kitchen would need to incorporate antique wood beams, a large family table and access to a new pool deck. The back entry would need to have a place for sports bags, coats and charging station. A new landscape plan would be provided which would have a new pool requiring a renovation of an existing guest house. The kitchen plan does not include a kitchen island at the request of the Owners. They wanted to have a large freestanding table for everyone to gather around. The kitchen appliances needed to be integrated or hidden from view for clear countertop spaces. The large French doors would open out onto the new pool deck. The kitchen is connected to the main house through two doorways. The first doorway goes through to the renovated family space and the second doorway goes to a new butler’s pantry hall.
