The theme chosen for the open space was “Jungle Gym” - intended to provide a fanciful play area for the children where they could be as boisterous as desired. New maple laminate flooring, new ceiling with boxed in mechanical and recessed lighting, and new drywall walls addressed the shell. An anchored ladder and floor mat encourage the kids to swing in the jungle treetops with the giraffe and chimp. The vines trail across walls and ceiling throughout the room.

Nancy Knickerbocker of Reico Kitchen and Bath in Southern Pines, NC collaborated with Chis Sowell to design a transitional style kitchen design featuring Green Forest cabinetry. The kitchen cabinets are in the Park Place door style in a Sea Dance Green finish, complimented with Cambria Brittanicca Gold countertops. The kitchen also includes a Kohler faucet and MDC D Shape sink. "I had a fantastic experience with the design and installation team at Reico. They were professional, talented, and easy to work with. Home Remodeling Project Overview This extensive home remodeling project transformed a dated and inefficient layout into a functional, open, and aesthetically cohesive living space. The original layout had several challenges: • A kitchen with limited storage, no cabinets on the window side, a sink facing the wall, and a range crammed into the corner. The pantry closet was too deep and impractical. • A living room that couldn’t accommodate furniture without interfering with traffic flow. • A front foyer with wasted space. • A claustrophobic hallway toilet room without a sink, located near the laundry room. The Remodeling Concept The scope of this project extended well beyond the kitchen. We proposed several layout options to address issues in all adjacent spaces, ultimately implementing a plan that: • Removed two walls and moved doorways. • Replaced the kitchen window. • Converted the hallway toilet room into a storage space. • Installed pocket doors to separate the laundry hallway from the living room. Kitchen Transformation • Open Concept: By removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room, the two spaces became a seamless open area. • New Layout: Cabinets were relocated to the window side for more storage and natural light. A central island with storage and seating was added, and a coffee bar was installed in the dining room. • Updated Pantry: The deep pantry closet was converted into a pullout pantry with a cabinet front for better accessibility. • Design Details: Off-white kitchen cabinets pair beautifully with a light green island. Warm white quartz counters and an artisan tile backsplash complete the look. Dining Room • Expanded Space: Most of the wall separating the dining room and foyer was removed, creating a more spacious area while still accommodating all furniture thanks to careful measurements. Living Room Improvements • Optimized Layout: Moving doorways and installing pocket doors allowed for better furniture placement, including a sofa that doesn’t interfere with traffic flow. • Fireplace Upgrade: The brick fireplace was updated with a three-dimensional staggered stone veneer in a color matching the kitchen cabinets, creating a cohesive look. A TV was installed above the fireplace at a comfortable viewing angle. Additional Updates • New Flooring: All remodeled rooms now feature updated flooring. • Ceilings: Popcorn ceilings were replaced with smooth, flat finishes, complemented by recessed lighting. • Walls: Fresh paint throughout the space, with an accent wall in the living room matching the light green of the kitchen island. • Lighting: Stylish sconces were added for a touch of elegance. The Result The homeowners are thrilled with the transformation, marveling at how their once cramped and inefficient home now feels spacious, functional, and beautifully cohesive. This project combines two existing studio apartments into a compact 800 sqft. live/work space for a young professional couple in the heart of Chelsea, New York. The design required some creative space planning to meet the Owner’s requested program for an open plan solution with a private master bedroom suite and separate study that also allowed for entertaining small parties, including the ability to provide a sleeping space for guests. The solution was to identify areas of overlap within the program that could be addressed with dual-function custom millwork pieces. A bar-stool counter at the open kitchen folds out to become a bench and dining table for formal entertaining. A custom desk folds down with a murphy bed to convert a private study into a guest bedroom area. A series of pocket door connecting the spaces provide both privacy to the master bedroom area when closed, and the option for a completely open layout when opened. A carefully selected material palette brings a warm, tranquil feel to the space. Reclaimed teak floors run seamlessly through the main spaces to accentuate the open layout. Warm gray lacquered millwork, Centaurus granite slabs, and custom oxidized stainless steel details, give an elegant counterpoint to the natural teak floors. The master bedroom suite and study feature custom Afromosia millwork. The bathrooms are finished with cool toned ceramic tile, custom Afromosia vanities, and minimalist chrome fixtures. A Whole House Transformation – conceived as a remodel and addition, the final design iteration for this home is uniquely multifaceted. There were structural considerations and the overall floor plan design centered on maximizing the views. Additions to this home totaled over 1,200 square feet. What was once the master suite, on the second floor, is now a teenagers bedroom. The master suite was relocated to the first floor and is now overlooking the pool, pool house and patio with panoramic views of the backyard. The front entrance closet became the new entrance for the master suite, which includes a sprawling bathroom and boutique closet. Underneath this area is the new theater and billiard room located in the lower level. A new front entrance and roof gables were added for a seamless new exterior look on the right side of the house. The new functional home office, gourmet kitchen, wainscot dining room, and laundry on the main level were taken down to the studs. A new traditional style for the home was created with new cabinetry, trim and millwork, space planning and detail. The lower level was gutted and turned into an award winning showpiece with gym, full wet bar and kitchen, wine nook, family room and game room marrying the new addition with theater and billiard area. The entire exterior stucco was taken off the home and pool house replacing it with stone, stone pillars, shakes and board and batten. The small screen deck was torn off making for expansive 3 season living with a new covered stone grill area. The patio was expanded with a stone fireplace overlooking the entire backyard and pool area. Adding to the new design were landscape features with a new concrete driveway, stone address pier light, stamped concrete walkway to the newly created front covered porch and bead board ceiling, creating an amazing first impression.

You are walking quietly through the tall grass next to a wide river, brown and fast moving from fresh floods. The hot sun setting slowly overhead. Just as the sun begins to touch the horizon, the whole sky is brushed in a rich orange hue. You emerge from the grass to be greeted by your first sight of African lions in their natural habitat and a Serengeti sunset that will stay with you for the rest of your life. This was the moment that began this project, inspiring the client to recreate that moment for their sport hunting trophy room in their home. The goal was to be able to recreate that experience as closely as possible, while also ensuring that every mount in the collection had the ideal amount and type of light directed at it. Nature exhibits an infinite amount of unique color and light environments. From rich color in every hue and temperature, to light of all different intensities and quality. In order to deliver the client’s expectations, we needed a solution that can reflect the diverse lighting environments the client was looking to recreate. Using a Ketra lighting system, controlled through a Lutron HomeWorks QS system, tied in seamlessly to an existing Lutron HomeWorks Illumination system, we were able to meet all of these challenges. Tying into the existing system meant that we could achieve these results in the space that the client was focused on without having to replace the whole system. In that focused space, creating dynamic lighting environments was central to several elements of the design, and Ketra’s color temperature settings enabled us to be extremely flexible while still providing high quality light in all circumstances. Using a large track system consisting of 30 S30 lamps, each individually addressed, we were able to create the ideal lighting settings for each mount. Additionally, we designed the system so that it can be set to match the unique warm standard Edison-style bulbs in the main chandelier, it can be set to a “Natural” mode that replicates the outdoor conditions throughout the day, or it can simulate the exact color temperature progression of that unforgettable Serengeti sunset. Control of the lighting environment and a smooth transition to the lighting systems in the rest of the home was also a priority. As a result, we installed 3 Lutron motorized shades in the space to account for ambient light, and 6 A20 lamps in an adjacent bar area to create a natural transition to the rest of the lighting system. This ensures that all of the lighting transitions, whether from the rest of the home to the trophy room or the trophy room to the outside, are continuous and smooth. The end result is an impressive and flexible display space with an added “wow factor” that is out of this hemisphere!

A family of five needed a kitchen that would accommodate three growing children. Better Storage organization was key in the redesign. The couple wanted to convert their galley kitchen into a larger space without compromising their dining area. They wanted a learning and gathering place for their children. They longed for a cozy but spacious kitchen to nurture their close-knit family. Their home is small so it was a challenge to create a kitchen that would address all of their needs The client wanted high quality, durable cabinetry with luxury finishes. We designed and installed high quality RUTT Cabinetry, all maple wood, American made cabinetry that will be durable and beautiful for so many years to come. The cabinetry color they chose was a soft gray. The finish is silky smooth. Since they love the marble look, we recommended 48”x48” porcelain wall tiles and a quartz countertop. This material achieves the look they want, is durable and is easy to keep clean. We installed a beautiful white oak wood floor stained in a custom grayish color that added charm to their older home. A vertical floor to ceiling, very stylish, aluminum hot Water radiator which gave them welcome heat. A bronze light fixture with clean lines added elegance and glowing light.

This suburban home was built back in the 1970s and still retained its original "charming" colored tile, petite shower, and a tiny 9x9 kitchen. The major issue? It was outdated and cramped! The owners desired additional space for their dining area, larger kitchen, bathrooms and updated finishes. Our team managed to add square footage to the living room to accommodate a full sized dining table overlooking the garden. By moving the dining room out of the kitchen, this helped us almost double the kitchen's size where we added a bar, full pantry and plenty of storage. We removed a hall closet to expand the bathroom area, enabling us to create two rectangular bathrooms instead of two intertwined bathrooms. In the primary bathroom, we added a full-sized shower with a bench, as well as plenty of cabinet storage. Additionally, we gave the house a fresh look with new hardwood floors that matched the old ones (still visible in the bedrooms), as well as new solid core doors, hardware, and brand new paint throughout. The exterior was revamped with new lighting, landscaping, cement patio, fresh paint, address numbers and an aluminum pergola to provide shade from the hot summer sun. This remodel is the perfect example that you can still evoke luxury in smaller homes.

This is the first home of a young professional couple. Their main goal was to remodel their kitchen to create a more open feel. At the time the kitchen included a built in bench and table that was dated and nonfunctional. We worked together to create a new layout on our design software program. It was very helpful for our clients to see their new kitchen in 3-D drawings. We removed a bearing wall between the dining room and kitchen and opened it up for a breakfast bar contained in the peninsula. During demolition we found that there was no foundation under the floor joists in the concealed crawl space below the kitchen and no footings under the bearing wall. Our Burlington client hired us to beautifully update the living room, dining room and lounge area of their main floor. They were looking for improved functionality in terms of layout, as well as a more colourful space. They requested we also incorporate an office area in the dining room and coffee bar in the lounge. We happily created a custom design to address all of their requests. The final result was stunning and so well put together that the clients have since hired us back to create a custom design for their principal bedroom.

These clients debated moving from their dated 1979 house but decided to remodel since they loved their neighborhood and location of their home. We did a whole house interior and exterior remodel for them and they are so happy with their decision. The homeowners felt that reading floorplans was not so easy, so they loved our ability to provide 3D renderings and our personal touches and suggestions from our in-house designers. The general layout of the home stayed the same with a few minor changes. We took the 38 year old home down to the studs and transformed it completely. The only thing that remains unchanged is the address. The popcorn texture was removed from the ceiling, removed all soffits, replaced all cabinets, flooring and countertops throughout the home. The wet bar was removed from the living room opening the space. The kitchen layout remained the same, but the cook surface was moved. Unneeded space was removed from the laundry room, giving them a larger pantry. The master suite remained the same but additional lighting was added for reading. We made major improvements in the master bath by adding a rain shower, more storage and a bench to their new shower and gave them a larger bathtub. All new cedar siding was replaced on the exterior of the home and a fresh coat of paint makes this 1979 home look brand new! Inspiration for a coastal kitchen remodel in New York

After living in their home for ten years, these homeowners are empty nesters. They went back and forth between remodeling their 2nd floor and creating a backyard oasis. Ultimately, they felt a garage/backyard makeover would best suit their lifestyle. They had no privacy, no shade, and a space longing for attention. Castle Building & Remodeling teamed up with Field Outdoor Spaces to reimagine this space for everyday use, as well as entertaining. The garage, which was previously attached to the house, was completely torn down. The new garage was built from the ground up, closer to the alley. This freed up space for what is now a lovely outdoor kitchen pavilion. Held up by wrapped cedar posts and beams, the ceiling is creatively finished with walnut floor planks. At the ground, stamped concrete was poured to create a stone look. The covered patio extends into a walkway towards the new garage, so the homeowners never have to worry about getting wet when coming and going. This walkway also features motion-activated lights, designed to illuminate the homeowner’s path as he/she enters from the garage. The outdoor cooking/bar area with concrete countertops and stainless steel storage units is the heart of this space.
