This front yard had to also act as a clients back yard. The existing back yard is a ravine, so there is little room to functionally use it. This created a design element to create a sense of space/privacy while also allowing the Mid Century Modern Architecture to shine through. (and keep the feel of a front yard) We used concrete walls to break up the rooms, and guide people into the front entrance. We added IPE details on the wall and planters to soften the concrete, and Ore Inc aluminum containers with a rust finish to frame the entrance. The Aspen trees break the horizontal plane and are lit up at night, further defining the front yard. All the trees are on color lights and have the ability to change at the click of a button for both holidays, and seasonal accents. The slate chip beds keep the bed lines clean and clearly define the planting ares versus the lawn areas. The walkway is one monolithic pour that mimics the look of large scale pavers, with the added function of smooth,set-in-place, concrete.

Budget demanded keeping the whirlpool tub and existing plumbing locations while transforming the space to a serene environment in keeping with the house. All drawers are functional on the floating vanity not allowing the plumbing trap to take away storage space. Mirrors conceal storage and have contemporary styling and LED lighting. The undulating limestone backsplash adds textural interest with a minimal design. Sleek large-scale brick patterned flooring creates a more tranquil space than the previous black and white checkerboard environment. The clients desired a ‘his and her’ arrangement in this closet that required more organization. Faux wenge melamine doors, instead of wood veneer, met budget requirements. Lucite hardware up the style and frosted glass door panels lighten up the dark finishes and provide neatness and functionality by allowing an orderly way to glimpse what is hidden inside. This 1930's Barrington Hills farmhouse was in need of some TLC when it was purchased by this southern family of five who planned to make it their new home. The renovation taken on by Advance Design Studio's designer Scott Christensen and master carpenter Justin Davis included a custom porch, custom built in cabinetry in the living room and children's bedrooms, 2 children's on-suite baths, a guest powder room, a fabulous new master bath with custom closet and makeup area, a new upstairs laundry room, a workout basement, a mud room, new flooring and custom wainscot stairs with planked walls and ceilings throughout the home. The home's original mechanicals were in dire need of updating, so HVAC, plumbing and electrical were all replaced with newer materials and equipment. A dramatic change to the exterior took place with the addition of a quaint standing seam metal roofed farmhouse porch perfect for sipping lemonade on a lazy hot summer day. In addition to the changes to the home, a guest house on the property underwent a major transformation as well. Newly outfitted with updated gas and electric, a new stacking washer/dryer space was created along with an updated bath complete with a glass enclosed shower, something the bath did not previously have. A beautiful kitchenette with ample cabinetry space, refrigeration and a sink was transformed as well to provide all the comforts of home for guests visiting at the classic cottage retreat. The biggest design challenge was to keep in line with the charm the old home possessed, all the while giving the family all the convenience and efficiency of modern functioning amenities. One of the most interesting uses of material was the porcelain "wood-looking" tile used in all the baths and most of the home's common areas. All the efficiency of porcelain tile, with the nostalgic look and feel of worn and weathered hardwood floors. The home’s casual entry has an 8" rustic antique barn wood look porcelain tile in a rich brown to create a warm and welcoming first impression. Painted distressed cabinetry in muted shades of gray/green was used in the powder room to bring out the rustic feel of the space which was accentuated with wood planked walls and ceilings. Fresh white painted shaker cabinetry was used throughout the rest of the rooms, accentuated by bright chrome fixtures and muted pastel tones to create a calm and relaxing feeling throughout the home. Custom cabinetry was designed and built by Advance Design specifically for a large 70” TV in the living room, for each of the children’s bedroom’s built in storage, custom closets, and book shelves, and for a mudroom fit with custom niches for each family member by name. The ample master bath was fitted with double vanity areas in white. A generous shower with a bench features classic white subway tiles and light blue/green glass accents, as well as a large free standing soaking tub nestled under a window with double sconces to dim while relaxing in a luxurious bath. Our clients wanted to modernise and brighten their kitchen while keeping utility appliances discreetly out of sight. For this project, we used our EasyTouch handleless cabinetry in a sophisticated pairing of Sand and Taupe, bringing a subtle contrast and warmth to the room. The base units were finished in Taupe Grey, grounding the space with a sleek, contemporary tone. The overhead cabinets in Sand added a lighter, beige-toned lift that opens up the room beautifully. The result is a refined, layered look that feels both modern and inviting. Algarve Quartz worktops in Blanco Snow elevate the design with a crisp, polished surface, complemented by a matching quartz splashback behind the hob for a seamless finish. To maximise both form and function, we extended the peninsular area for additional worktop space and created a special freezer larder unit alongside a stylish wine and coffee niche. An adjacent area originally displaced was incorporated into the kitchen by removing a few walls to tie it in to the new space. Transformed into an attractive dinette bar, the complex task of incorporating stairs in the kitchen was successfully accomplished with a beautiful custom designed stainless steel and glass railing and a quaint bench seat. A cluttered closet was transformed into a functional walk in pantry just around the corner. Jurs took advantage of fourteen-foot ceilings by stacking beautiful maple cabinetry over eight feet high around the perimeter of the kitchen. Elegant glass doors with frosted glass lit from behind wrap the entire kitchen for a dramatic effect in the evening. The island was custom designed to suit the specific needs of the cook. Standard height work surfaces were created on either side of the island for food prep and chopping on two Sipo Mahogany wood tops. The center island of Cambrian honed black granite was set at 37 ½” high, perfectly suited for a tall cook! The large curved breakfast bar easily accommodates groups of kids, as well as guests and family during entertaining. New floors tie the entire living space together with White Ash Hardwood and a granite looking Porcelain tile from Italy. Full height granite backsplashes add depth, while situated on dramatic Crema Bordeaux granite counter tops that boast colors of the Grand Canyon. Frameless, wide style Shaker doors and Stainless Steel accents emphasize the warm, yet simple contemporary nature of this beautiful new space.
