Inspiration for a modern living room remodel in San Francisco

Perched on a forested hillside above Missoula, the Pattee Canyon Residence provides a series of bright, light filled spaces for a young family of six. Set into the hillside, the home appears humble from the street while opening up to panoramic views towards the valley. The family frequently puts on large gatherings for friends of all ages; thus, multiple “eddy out” spaces were created throughout the home for more intimate chats. Exposed steel structural ribs and generous glazing in the great room create a rhythm and draw one’s gaze to the folding horizon. Smaller windows on the lower level frame intimate portraits of nature. Cedar siding and dark shingle roofing help the home blend in with its piney surroundings. Inside, rough sawn cabinetry and nature inspired tile provide a textural balance with the bright white spaces and contemporary fixtures.

The Black Tie Series combines four classic yet bold styles based on a variegated stripe theme. Each has a unique texture and rhythm. Sampled in a sophisticated coloration of white, black and taupe, the Black Tie Collection products will adapt well to most color palettes. The products include Black Jack, Empire, Shimmer & Wall Street: BLACKJACK With a nubby texture, reminiscent of a fisherman’s sweater, Blackjack alternates rows of thick loop stripe with textures vertical ribs in a two-color check.

From the street, the Bowmanville House commands attention with its confident interplay of form, color, and texture. The design alternates between light and dark volumes, with white Trespa panels stacked above deep brown cladding and black accents. This layering not only enhances the home's visual depth but also anchors the structure firmly to its double-lot site. The elevated glass-fronted deck on the upper level creates a striking focal point, projecting outward as both an architectural feature and a functional living space. Beneath it, sheltered ground-level space adds versatility, offering shade and protection while reinforcing the building's sense of proportion. The black vertical stair at the side provides a crisp architectural line, while the arrangement of windows punctuates the facade with rhythm and balance. Every choice—from material selection to massing—reflects a modernist ethos tailored for family living in an urban neighborhood. This home doesn't just sit on the lot—it defines it. It's a bold gesture of contemporary design in a context where few homes push boundaries this way, setting a new precedent for how form and function can coexist beautifully.

A small, oddly shaped lot on a coastal canyon provided the perfect opportunity to create a new home for the Spencer family. Challenges included the need for a variance and a lengthy permit process with the Coastal Commission. The payoff is a beautiful home now tucked in an existing neighborhood in old San Clemente. Alternating stucco and cement board lap siding create a dynamic street front rhythm. Large aluminum windows and doors open to a large second story deck and views to the canyon and ocean beyond.
