Tucked under the house's main staircase is where you'll find this chic powder room. Challenged by the 40" width and the 72" length, functional and visual tricks were used to reach the goal of designing a perfect little gem. Using the consistency of color material, Carrera Marble was used on the floor, walls and the carved console with integrated sink. A classic basket weave pattern was used on the floor. The walls are clad in marble subway tile and topped with a carved marble chair rail. A classic gray and white toile string cloth wallpaper finishes the walls and envelopes the ceiling.

This project was the result of the owner’s desire to install a swimming pool and outdoor living space inspired by tropical resorts they had visited on family vacations. The one element asked for specifically was a large waterfall spilling into the pool. The challenge for the designers was how to achieve the look the owner’s wished without the use of clichéd items such as thatched huts and tiki torches. The designers decided lush full plantings using plants found in the northeast region that met certain design criteria would be the primary way of giving the tropical feel. Boulder outcroppings, irregular stone paving and fire bowls along the back of the pool would complete the look. The property is located in a newer subdivision with homes on both sides and a school to the rear. A walkway connects the neighborhood and the school along one side. The desired privacy would be addressed by the placement of plants and trees around the perimeter in mounded beds. Placing the waterfall to the rear of the pool helped block the view of the school beyond. The township had restrictions on the amount of impervious material allowable on site. The patio was designed to the maximum allowable size with square footage going to where it would be most usable. Planting beds were cut into the patio to decrease unnecessary square footage, divide spaces, and allow for more places to add plants and trees. A rectangular swimming pool was chosen to make it easier to install an automatic pool cover. The pool was designed, with input from the landscape designers, and contracted separately by the owner. The landscape designers chose the location of pool and waterfall so that it was prominently placed to be the focal point of the backyard. The pool includes a curving sunbathing shelf running from end to end, finished in a lighter color to make it more visible, with removable umbrellas for shade and to add to the resort feel. To tie into the boulders used throughout the design, a large boulder was used as a substitute for a diving board. The yard sloped down towards the back of the property which required a large amount of soil to be added and large boulder retaining wall along the back. For the planting design, the designers choose to focus on plants with larger leaves, various leaf colors and textures, and plants with large flowers in bold colors. These plants were then arranged into a loose lush planting scheme mixed with more traditional northeast plants such as pines, grasses, and roses. Unique plants such as hardy bananas were added for their tropical and exotic look. The full planting beds help to nestle in and enclose the living space. Broken flagstone was chosen for the patio and intentionally left irregular at the edges. PA flagstone was avoided and a stone with gold and brown tones was chosen. Boulder outcroppings added to the natural and tropical theme. The fire pit was designed with a large built-in bench to increase the amount of seating. The designers chose a rounded smooth shape and incorporated the same stone as the pool coping for the caps and bench. For entertaining guests the outdoor kitchen was outfitted with a large gas grill, beverage taps, refrigerator, sink and a dedicated lobster cooker. The kitchen was finished with granite countertops and stainless steel cabinets. Two strategically placed fire bowls, along with the low voltage lighting, add additional interest to the space at night. While the designers were faced with many challenges the resulting design incorporated enough elements to achieve the desired look and feel. Using plants appropriate to the northeast that fit the design criteria and carefully choosing hardscaping materials was essential. The owner’s feel they now have their own tropical theme resort right in their Pennsylvania backyard.

We Feng Shui'ed and designed this transitional space for our homeowner. We stayed true to the period of this 1930s Colonial with appropriate period wallpapers and such, but brought it up to date with exciting colors, and a good dose of current furnishings. I decided to go a bit more modern in this home office. Our client's favorite color is coral, which we featured prominently here.

Hull Historical completed this classic renovation to this 1940's Colonial Revival. The majority of the work was on the back of the house which included a new master sitting porch and walkway that connected the main house to the rear garage which we had to tie together in a clever and appropriate way. An historic estate in the Hamptons, this project called for style-appropriate long-lasting hardware. The arched gates were outfitted with solid bronze gate latches, hinges, and cane bolts. Gates were hung with 4” Solid Bronze Heavy Duty Button Tip Hinges. Solid Bronze 20” Cane Bolts hold the fixed gate in place. The gates had relatively narrow stiles (vertical members) and so the box latch was used. The box latch has a shorter latching arm, which means it can be used on gates with narrow stiles. On the other side is a 5” plate with octagonal handle. NB: These site photos were taken from an active construction site in the midst of winter. Gates and hardware show rain and dirt.

This was a dried out weed strewn desert of a corner lot - including front, side and back gardens, with enormous parkways as well. The entire landscape hadn’t been touched in many years. We removed all the dead grass and weeds, created swales and berms, a big rain garden, paths and seating areas all with permeable paving. Also added fruit trees and veggie beds, and transformed the space completely. Now, the garden is full of birds, butterflies and pollinators! And the clients got a sizable rebate through the LADWP landscape rebate program!

Our client fell in love with the original 80s style of this house. However, no part of it had been updated since it was built in 1981. Both the style and structure of the home needed to be drastically updated to turn this house into our client’s dream modern home. We are also excited to announce that this renovation has transformed this 80s house into a multiple award-winning home, including a major award for Renovator of the Year from the Vancouver Island Building Excellence Awards. The original layout for this home was certainly unique. In addition, there was wall-to-wall carpeting (even in the bathroom!) and a poorly maintained exterior. There were several goals for the Modern Revival home. A new covered parking area, a more appropriate front entry, and a revised layout were all necessary. Therefore, it needed to have square footage added on as well as a complete interior renovation. One of the client’s key goals was to revive the modern 80s style that she grew up loving. Alfresco Living Design and A. Willie Design worked with Made to Last to help the client find creative solutions to their goals.

This 1960s home was in original condition and badly in need of some functional and cosmetic updates. We opened up the great room into an open concept space, converted the half bathroom downstairs into a full bath, and updated finishes all throughout with finishes that felt period-appropriate and reflective of the owner's Asian heritage.

With the high ceiling, wood beams and stunning lighting fixture by the entry the appropriate style for this home will be going Transitional. There will be a mix of pieces with curvature and some others more linear giving it a fresh and clean look. Several of the upholstered furniture pieces will have nail head trims showcasing an elegant and grand look. The color scheme will consist of neutral colors such as ivories and taupe’s with a color pop of olive though out the art and accessories

This clients Bedroom was actually too large and didn't have enough closet space which is not uncommon for a premium spec home by a National Builder / Developer. Our goal was to create an Owner's Bedroom Suite that felt more intimate and cozy as opposed to vast open space. In addition, more wardrobe space was a 'must have'. We took the over-sized bedroom with cathedral ceiling and created smaller ancillary spaces like a sitting nook, walk-in wardrobe and shoe & accessory closet. We flattened out the cathedral ceiling to create a contemporary tray ceiling with ambient light. By re-scaling the room, we added more storage and functional spaces that created a sense of purpose, intimacy and coziness. The result was a welcoming bedroom that is scaled appropriately for the Owner's furniture and art collection.

Casual inviting family room loaded with pattern and texture just draws you in to come and sit down. A comfy velvet sofa, stylish ottomans, banana-leaf chair, sisal rug, accent tables, and zig-zag drapes all work together very well. The fireplace now has a larger and appropriate presence in the space and is a beautiful secondary focal point. The sofa is from the Prince Frederick Furniture Store, the banana chair and cushion is from Pier 1, the ottomans, gold accent pillows, cream colored faux fur throw, and a few accessories are from Home Goods, the zig zag drapes are from Bed Bath & Beyond, and the sisal area rug is from IKEA.

The playful design solution incorporated natural palette of materials such as recycled timber, stone and weatherboard creating a blended connection between the indoor and outdoor environment. The controlled interplay of details and natural materials have developed a language reminiscent of the Currumbin Beach style and develops an aesthetic that provides a soft human scale appropriate for children. The Timber battened Entry façade creates a contemporary cubic form of which replicates consistently through the integrated hubby house playground design. Renovation of the existing house created three classrooms, staffroom and utility spaces creating a feeling of home and strong connection to the Currumbin creek through the dappled landscaped vista. Extension areas created two classrooms and administrative areas are linked by a series of breezeway covered areas which provide shelter and safe sanctuary. Joint Venture between the Childcare and Wellness Centre to the front enabled carparking and accessibility of the battle-axe site.
