Originally a nearly three-story tall 1920’s European-styled home was turned into a modern villa for work and home. A series of low concrete retaining wall planters and steps gradually takes you up to the second level entry, grounding or anchoring the house into the site, as does a new wrap around veranda and trellis. Large eave overhangs on the upper roof were designed to give the home presence and were accented with a Mid-century orange color. The new master bedroom addition white box creates a better sense of entry and opens to the wrap around veranda at the opposite side. Inside the owners live on the lower floor and work on the upper floor with the garage basement for storage, archives and a ceramics studio. New windows and open spaces were created for the graphic designer owners; displaying their mid-century modern furnishings collection. A lot of effort went into attempting to lower the house visually by bringing the ground plane higher with the concrete retaining wall planters, steps, wrap around veranda and trellis, and the prominent roof with exaggerated overhangs. That the eaves were painted orange is a cool reflection of the owner’s Dutch heritage. Budget was a driver for the project and it was determined that the footprint of the home should have minimal extensions and that the new windows remain in the same relative locations as the old ones. The owner of this Devil’s Glen Ski Resort chalet was determined to honour the original structure built by his father. At the same time, a growing family created the need for an amplified space. The design for the enlarged chalet attempts to incorporate proportions and angles from the original craftsman styled structure while simultaneously taking cues from the challenging mountain site. Stonework and timber beams create a framework for expansive glazing that affords sweeping views to the mountain, snow and sky. As a result, a new generation of skiers is engaged with the mountain and it’s community in the same way the owner’s father provided him.

One of the first items our client chose for her bedroom which set the feel was an exquisite mother of pearl inlay chest of drawers originating from Jaipur, India. We were truly on a mission when it came to finding a mirror for her bedroom as the size had to be just right so as not to overpower the natural balance of the room. After many attempts we eventually found a Chinese-inspired mirror with a heavily distressed painted frame featuring a delicate, ornate, textural design. The large Blossom chandelier from Porta Romana with glass detail in decayed silver, constructed from forged steel, beautifully complements her sophisticated taste.

Home design - eclectic home design idea in San Francisco

Customer had always wanted a drought resistant landscaping, and head unsuccessfully attempted it on his own two years prior. We started with an area completely overgrown with Bermuda and dead plants. We built a dry river bed through the center, and planted an Olive tree and Palo Verde tree. The orange of the coral aloe and the scent of the Mexican sage is a delight to the senses.
