This small third bedroom in a 1950's North Vancouver home originally housed our growing interior design business. When we outgrew this 80 square foot space and moved to a studio across the street, I wondered what would become of this room with its lovely ocean view. As it turns out it evolved into a shared creative space for myself and my very artistic 7 year old daughter. In the spirit of Virginia Wolfe's "A Room of One's Own" this is a creative space where we are surrounded by some of our favourite things including vintage collectibles & furniture, artwork and craft projects, not to mention my all time favourite Cole and Son wallpaper. Moon Canyon is a 1930s hunting cabin in the Mount Washington neighbourhood of Los Angeles, restored by NoNo Studio with the careful, unhurried attention of someone re-potting an ancient tree. Original cedar panelling, a 1970s stained glass insert, and decades of layered character were preserved and built around rather than swept away. The project was featured in Architectural Digest, Leibal, and Vogue Australia. Three of our pieces found their place within it. The Oak Lamp — a floor lamp with a hand turned white oak base made by Surcle Wood in Los Angeles and an elephant grass shade woven by SWOPA in northern Ghana — brings two LA and Ghanaian craft traditions into a single object. The Casita Lamp, a table lamp whose ceramic base is formed by celebrated Oaxacan potter Eligio Zárate Blanco and whose palm shade is woven by award-winning weaver Belén Perez Garcia using a technique passed down through generations of her family, sits quietly in the space with the same material honesty that runs through the whole restoration. A small one-off bedside lamp completes the picture. Each piece was chosen for a home where nothing is incidental. That is precisely the kind of space our work is made for. Located on a heritage-lined street in Melbourne’s Williamstown, a young family were seeking a contemporary home with ample room to grow. Benni Trajcevski of Achieve Design Group answered their call, creating the epitome of modern living concealed behind a modest façade. To achieve the long wish list including large indoor and outdoor gathering spaces to entertain family and friends, separate adult and children living and sleeping zones, and a pool suitable for year-round use, Benni has maximised every inch of the block. Seamless transitional spaces link inside with out. This flow between the indoors and outdoors is a key feature of the home, achieved through generous open floor planning and glazing. For example, large hidden sliding doors allow the pool to be closed-off for use in winter; acrylic glass panels link the pool with the sunken lounge, which includes a fire pit for year-round comfort. The inclusion of a courtyard and voids throughout create separate useable zones while maintaining the feeling of spaciousness. Orientated to the north and surrounded with floor to ceiling windows to optimise natural light, the courtyard divides the formal lounge area with the informal living area, while the first floor is divided into four separate wings for privacy and functionality. The interiors are detailed with quality materials and finishes to achieve a sleek and sophisticated aesthetic. Contrasting materials in muted tones, including tiles, steel and lightweight timbers are featured throughout. Corian and a moss green wall are unexpected features.

This lush inner-city renovation in New South Whales highlights just what can be done in a small space and the luxury feel that can be achieved on a low budget. This pristine, modern unit design offers clean lines, easy flow and plenty of natural light! The client requested an ultra-luxe design and construction that catered to their functional needs with their own style and personal taste incorporated. Katherine grew up in southern Vermont, on the Connecticut River where her parents were sheep farmers. She has undergraduate degrees in Political Science and Spanish and holds a master’s degree in Liberal Studies. She was able to combine her love for the arts, literature and theory with a burgeoning interest in understanding residential design and the built environment while researching her master’s project. Katherine believes the way our environments are designed impact who we are, our local histories, and whether we are able to lead fulfilling lives. Her driving force is people; seeing how teamwork can build something from nothing, witnessing the pride people show for their work, as well as sharing in positive feedback and professional growth. Katherine spends her free time organizing furniture, beautifying spaces, reading novels, birdwatching, watching British/foreign spy and crime drama, and going to auctions. Her favorite destination is Home (southern Vermont) and she would love to visit Australia again. Her guilty pleasures are reading Harry Bosch detective novels, eating chewy candy or fruit snacks. A fun fact about Katherine: she cuts her own hair.
