What had been the family summer “camp” on the lake for many years was to become a summer “home” for the owners in their retirement years. After meeting the requirements for rebuilding at waters edge, the couple focused on their next big requirement: a wonderful kitchen. This kitchen would be part of a single living space that combines the kitchen, dining and sitting areas. They wanted a beautiful, warm, inviting kitchen where they could enjoy their family, a kitchen that would take advantage of views of the lake, a kitchen that would be especially functional for one or more cooks and helpers -- and make it the perfect shade of yellow, please! While they thought they wanted a kitchen with an island that overlooked the rest of the living space, their designer suggested a U-shaped design. A peninsula would minimize the concern that someone would inadvertently miss the edge of the two steps down to the lower living/dining area. It would also give them a kitchen that would allow for things on their wish list: a mantle style hood, a large window at the back of the house, countertop seating and lots of storage. Placing the stove and mantle hood in the corner of the room created space for the large window, and opened up space for high quality storage with uninterrupted lengths of countertop. Rather than competing with the windows and the views, the high style of the mantle hood complements and balances the entire space. Glass was added to the upper section of the wall cabinets. They continue the effect of the transom windows and provide for display of pottery that had been collected over the years. The sink was strategically positioned on the peninsula so that during food preparation or clean up there are views to the lake -- and the opportunity to socialize with people gathered at the countertop or in the living/dining area! Countertop seating was created by angling the extended Shivakashi granite countertop back into the kitchen and away from the steps. A third chair pulls up to the end of the countertop. It’s the favorite seat in the house! The kitchen in this rebuilt lakeside home is being enjoyed and loved in its perfect shade of yellow – magically named “Full Moon”.

This stunning glass enclosed modern custom wine cellar was designed and installed by Vintage Cellars earlier this year. The Contemporary Custom Wine Room was fitted into an existing fireplace space, turning the visually unappealing sore thumb of the room into a magnificent show stopping centerpiece. This modern luxury condo on the 31st floor in a downtown San Diego high-rise acted as a very interesting project for the custom wine cellar design team at Vintage Cellars. The modern wine room space has dual paned, insulated glass but because of the nature of glass itself, the cooling unit was recommended to be oversized. The custom wine room space itself didn't have great options for venting the cooling unit due to the location on the 31st floor. The best option to vent was determined to treat the wine room as a wine cabinet, per se. The Cooling Unit, a CellarPro 1800 XTS, was placed in the ceiling, venting down cool air and circulating vented air back upward. The result works perfectly for a uniquely modern and contemporary space such as this. This fully enclosed, glass front custom wine cellar boasts a 300 bottle capacity with a sleek, modern, label forward feel that ULTRA Wine Peg racking is known for. The center section is a double stacked full reveal display row, showcasing some of the homeowner's finer wines. Though no particular space was made within the wine racking area, the design of this modern custom wine cellar was pushed back a couple of feet so that wine case storage could be an option between the glass front and the custom racking. Additionally, the clean feel goes even further upon looking for the entrance into this wine cellar. The flat panel on the furthest left side opens slowly and almost magically when pushed in slightly. This two-toned custom kitchen was designed for our 5-foot client who loves to cook. Although the floorplan stayed the same, she dreamed of having an appropriate-sized cooktop, and top cabinets she could easily access. We dropped the back wall toekick a few inches allowing her to safely reach and have better use of the burners. To the left, a small waterfall edge in creamy white Caesarstone quartz, transitions into a standard counter height. Below her cooktop, we have larger drawers for pots and pants and spice pull-outs as her cooking zone. As for the backsplash, our client really loved her travertine tile, we kept it and refilled the areas as needed in our new design. We boosted our total countertop area with a custom-wrapped bookcase to the left of the sink. This also allowed us to bring the island forward. The island and hood are both in the color Miso, a slightly darker stain. Everything turned out great! If only the fridge would have made it in time. The "blue hour" is that magical time of day when sunlight scatters and the sky becomes a deep shade of blue. For this Mediterranean-style Sea Cliff home from the 1920s, we took our design inspiration from the twilight period that inspired artists and photographers. The living room features moody blues and neutral shades on the main floor. We selected contemporary furnishings and modern art for this active family of five. Upstairs are the bedrooms and a home office, while downstairs, a media room, and wine cellar provide a place for adults and young children to relax and play.

These three images serve as a mood board for our Los Angeles Redesign. Incorporating nature back into Los Angeles was at the fore-front of our redesign. The top image is from Avatar the Last Airbender, called the Banyan-Grove Tree. This tree drove our figurative narrative concept of "roots" that connect the entire 1x1 mile square we were tasked to redesign. In the show, the banyan tree expands its roots all across the swap to plant more trees. The last two images serve as a visual aid for the "Routes to Roots" redesign. Lots of trees with expansive roots Narrative: Many years ago, a vast tree once enchanted the plains of Los Angeles. Scientists could not track the tree's age, deeming it immortal due to its many deeply ingrained and expansive roots across the city. To this day, scientists are still uncertain about the tree's origin. Its roots and lush branches sprawled anywhere it could, engulfing anything in its path. The tree had unique properties; anyone who touched the tree's foundations could communicate with another person a mile away and, on special occasions, grant auspicious fortunes. The city worshiped this magical tree because it was the center of all life. Or so it was. The discovery of the tree's healing sap quickly drove people mad, and in a frenzy, people began to chop at the tree. The growth of filmmaking and Hollywood attracted many people to LA because of the great weather and diverse landscape. Oil was discovered near the tree shortly after. Finally, oil production was the tipping point, and these three factors led to the demise of the immortal tree. By 1950, the vast tree had no longer enchanted the city. Nowadays, problems with constant traffic, heavy air pollution, and past effects of redlining have all repelled the potential residents of the territory. Gridding lurks within the city, unconsciously controlling the movement of people. The severe health risks from these problems and the water scarcity and well-being are making researchers rethink the city's future. Due to this, the government tasks architects from all over the country to redesign Los Angeles, but it has to relate to the once immortal tree. At the same time, they are providing solutions to these five issues: redlining, heat severity, accessibility, open spaces, and lastly, preserving essential landmarks and bringing back the city's roots while still housing the population. Years later, a team of architects pitched their 200-year redesign, reimagining the superfuture of Los Angeles. The mission will be titled "From Routes to Roots". Here's what they pitched:
