The Artisans Group, Inc.Winner of the 2018 Tour of Homes Best Remodel, this whole house re-design of a 1963 Bennet & Johnson mid-century raised ranch home is a beautiful example of the magic we can weave through the application of more sustainable modern design principles to existing spaces.
We worked closely with our client on extensive updates to create a modernized MCM gem.
Extensive alterations include:
- a completely redesigned floor plan to promote a more intuitive flow throughout
- vaulted the ceilings over the great room to create an amazing entrance and feeling of inspired openness
- redesigned entry and driveway to be more inviting and welcoming as well as to experientially set the mid-century modern stage
- the removal of a visually disruptive load bearing central wall and chimney system that formerly partitioned the homes’ entry, dining, kitchen and living rooms from each other
- added clerestory windows above the new kitchen to accentuate the new vaulted ceiling line and create a greater visual continuation of indoor to outdoor space
- drastically increased the access to natural light by increasing window sizes and opening up the floor plan
- placed natural wood elements throughout to provide a calming palette and cohesive Pacific Northwest feel
- incorporated Universal Design principles to make the home Aging In Place ready with wide hallways and accessible spaces, including single-floor living if needed
- moved and completely redesigned the stairway to work for the home’s occupants and be a part of the cohesive design aesthetic
- mixed custom tile layouts with more traditional tiling to create fun and playful visual experiences
- custom designed and sourced MCM specific elements such as the entry screen, cabinetry and lighting
- development of the downstairs for potential future use by an assisted living caretaker
- energy efficiency upgrades seamlessly woven in with much improved insulation, ductless mini splits and solar gain
Niche ModernEric Rorer
A trio of Axia pendants in Crystal glass adorns the kitchen island. Boasting a sexy, substantial middle, the Niche Axia modern pendant light makes a gorgeous addition to any environment. The Axia is part of the Crystalline Series which embraces playful, fresh colors and bold, defined angles but never strays far from Niche's core design principles of simplicity and elegance in modern lighting. Our signature Crystal glass complements the interior's neutral palette of beige tones and wood accents. The white quartzite countertops, walnut shelving, and herringbone wood floors all contribute to this kitchen's modernization.

Inspired Interiors - Design. Build. Furnish.Often times, the design is in the details, and that was certainly the case for our recent client’s full-home renovation. Drawing from the homeowner’s roots, it was important that we evoked European glamour through the entirety of the space. From the lighting to color composition and scale, the home tested our level of creativity and the embodiment of our guiding principle of creating a place for this particular couple to live, love, work and function. We were challenged with replacing the suburban 80s-era builder basic home with a cosmopolitan vibe that was dripping with glamour and elegance. Everything from the grand entrance with patterned floor to the spacious sitting room everything needed to have a dramatic, wow effect.

AIA Santa ClaraA modern single-family house is located in the northern downtown neighborhood of Palo Alto, a vibrant area surrounded by single-family homes. It was designed with an innovative, modular structural system and sustainable design principles. This residential building not only performs its basic tasks in terms of functional performance, physical comfort, and aesthetic values but it also acts as a mental mediation between space and our mind. The perception of the space created is not a sum of the visual, tactile, and audible elements but in unique way speaks to all your senses at once, creating experience of completeness. photo by Drew Kelly
Spratley & PartnersOnce home to antiquarian Horace Walpole, ‘Heckfield Place’ has been judiciously re-crafted into an ‘effortlessly stylish' countryside hotel with beautiful bedrooms, as well as two restaurants, a private cinema, Little Bothy spa, wine cellar, gardens and Home Farm, centred on sustainability and biodynamic farming principles.
Spratley & Partners completed the dramatic transformation of the 430-acre site in Hampshire into the UK’s most eagerly anticipated, luxury hotel in 2018, after a significant programme of restoration works which began in 2009 for private investment company, Morningside Group.
Later, modern additions to the site, which was being used as a conference centre and wedding venue, were largely unsympathetic and not in-keeping with the original form and layout; the house was extended in the 1980s with a block of bedrooms and conference facilities which were small, basic and required substantial upgrading. The rooms in the listed building had also been subdivided, creating cramped spaces and disrupting the historical plan of the house.
After years of careful restoration and collaboration, this elegant, Grade II listed Georgian house and estate has been brought back to life and sensitively woven into its secluded landscape surroundings.
