The Master Bedroom continues the theme of cool and warm, this time using all whites and neutrals and mixing in even more natural elements like seagrass, rattan, and greenery. The showstopper is the stained wood ceiling with an intricate yet modern geometric pattern. The master has retractable glass doors separating it and its private lanai.

The secret to a divine master bedroom starts with luxury bedding. Layer pillows with multiple textures, tones and fabrics to add visual interest along with a bench at the end of your bed.

When Cummings Architects first met with the owners of this understated country farmhouse, the building’s layout and design was an incoherent jumble. The original bones of the building were almost unrecognizable. All of the original windows, doors, flooring, and trims – even the country kitchen – had been removed. Mathew and his team began a thorough design discovery process to find the design solution that would enable them to breathe life back into the old farmhouse in a way that acknowledged the building’s venerable history while also providing for a modern living by a growing family. The redesign included the addition of a new eat-in kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms, wrap around porch, and stone fireplaces. To begin the transforming restoration, the team designed a generous, twenty-four square foot kitchen addition with custom, farmers-style cabinetry and timber framing. The team walked the homeowners through each detail the cabinetry layout, materials, and finishes. Salvaged materials were used and authentic craftsmanship lent a sense of place and history to the fabric of the space. The new master suite included a cathedral ceiling showcasing beautifully worn salvaged timbers. The team continued with the farm theme, using sliding barn doors to separate the custom-designed master bath and closet. The new second-floor hallway features a bold, red floor while new transoms in each bedroom let in plenty of light. A summer stair, detailed and crafted with authentic details, was added for additional access and charm. Finally, a welcoming farmer’s porch wraps around the side entry, connecting to the rear yard via a gracefully engineered grade. This large outdoor space provides seating for large groups of people to visit and dine next to the beautiful outdoor landscape and the new exterior stone fireplace. Though it had temporarily lost its identity, with the help of the team at Cummings Architects, this lovely farmhouse has regained not only its former charm but also a new life through beautifully integrated modern features designed for today’s family. An enchanting bedroom design filled with a host of blooming florals. Colored in a fresh blue and white palette, this decadent space has an air of Asian mystique.

Our team began the master bedroom design by anchoring the room with a dramatic but simple black canopy bed. The next layer was a neutral but textured area rug with a herringbone "zig zag" design that we repeated again in our throw pillows and nightstands. The light wood of the nightstands and woven window shades added subtle contrast and texture. Two seating areas provide ample comfort throughout the bedroom with a small sofa at the end of the bed and comfortable swivel chairs in front of the window. The long simple drapes are anchored by a simple black rod that repeats the black iron element of the canopy bed. The dresser is also black, which carries this color around the room. A black iron chandelier with wooden beads echoes the casually elegant design, while layers of cream bedding and a textural throw complete the design.

This coastal bedroom design is centered around a large blue abstract seascape painting that creates an immediate focal point and sets a calm, elevated tone for the entire space. The original artwork features soft horizon lines and layered ocean-inspired blues, bringing a serene, beach-house feel into the room. Its wide, horizontal scale makes it ideal for placement over a bed, helping to visually anchor the space while adding depth and openness. Framed in natural wood, the painting introduces warmth and texture, balancing the cool blue palette and giving the piece a finished, designer-quality presence. The artwork is intentionally the hero of the room—everything else is styled to support its impact. Our team was thrilled to design and furnish a beautiful blush nursery for baby Sloan's imminent arrival. The large scale rose wallpaper was the inspiration for the room's feminine design. Pale gray walls provide a quiet backdrop to the patterned wallpaper. Blush window treatments, crisp white furniture, and beautifully detailed children's artwork finish the space. The natural light flooding through the windows provides a tranquil space for a newborn baby.

With adjacent neighbors within a fairly dense section of Paradise Valley, Arizona, C.P. Drewett sought to provide a tranquil retreat for a new-to-the-Valley surgeon and his family who were seeking the modernism they loved though had never lived in. With a goal of consuming all possible site lines and views while maintaining autonomy, a portion of the house — including the entry, office, and master bedroom wing — is subterranean. This subterranean nature of the home provides interior grandeur for guests but offers a welcoming and humble approach, fully satisfying the clients requests. While the lot has an east-west orientation, the home was designed to capture mainly north and south light which is more desirable and soothing. The architecture’s interior loftiness is created with overlapping, undulating planes of plaster, glass, and steel. The woven nature of horizontal planes throughout the living spaces provides an uplifting sense, inviting a symphony of light to enter the space. The more voluminous public spaces are comprised of stone-clad massing elements which convert into a desert pavilion embracing the outdoor spaces. Every room opens to exterior spaces providing a dramatic embrace of home to natural environment. Grand Award winner for Best Interior Design of a Custom Home The material palette began with a rich, tonal, large-format Quartzite stone cladding. The stone’s tones gaveforth the rest of the material palette including a champagne-colored metal fascia, a tonal stucco system, and ceilings clad with hemlock, a tight-grained but softer wood that was tonally perfect with the rest of the materials. The interior case goods and wood-wrapped openings further contribute to the tonal harmony of architecture and materials. Grand Award Winner for Best Indoor Outdoor Lifestyle for a Home This award-winning project was recognized at the 2020 Gold Nugget Awards with two Grand Awards, one for Best Indoor/Outdoor Lifestyle for a Home, and another for Best Interior Design of a One of a Kind or Custom Home. At the 2020 Design Excellence Awards and Gala presented by ASID AZ North, Ownby Design received five awards for Tonal Harmony. The project was recognized for 1st place – Bathroom; 3rd place – Furniture; 1st place – Kitchen; 1st place – Outdoor Living; and 2nd place – Residence over 6,000 square ft. Congratulations to Claire Ownby, Kalysha Manzo, and the entire Ownby Design team. Tonal Harmony was also featured on the cover of the July/August 2020 issue of Luxe Interiors + Design and received a 14-page editorial feature entitled “A Place in the Sun” within the magazine.
