This historic home in Harbor Oaks, Florida was fully restored and remodeled by Nelson Construction and Renovations. Arguably the most prominent feature of the home, this luxurious oven and hood by Officine Gullo makes a bold statement in the midst of the sleek, white kitchen. The complement of marble, brass, glass and metal make for the perfect combination.

Photo credit Jane Beiles Located on a beautiful property with a legacy of architectural and landscape innovation, this guest house was originally designed by the offices of Eliot Noyes and Alan Goldberg. Due to its age and expanded use as an in-law dwelling for extended stays, the 1200 sf structure required a renovation and small addition. While one objective was to make the structure function independently of the main house with its own access road, garage, and entrance, another objective was to knit the guest house into the architectural fabric of the property. New window openings deliberately frame landscape and architectural elements on the site, while exterior finishes borrow from that of the main house (cedar, zinc, field stone) bringing unity to the family compound. Inside, the use of lighter materials gives the simple, efficient spaces airiness. A challenge was to find an interior design vocabulary which is both simple and clean, but not cold or uninteresting. A combination of rough slate, white washed oak, and high gloss lacquer cabinets provide interest and texture, but with their minimal detailing create a sense of calm. his shower used to be a closet. We borrowed three feet from an adjacent hall closet (while still retaining enough closet space) to build it, and this kind of problem solving is one of our favorite parts of design. Finding unexpected ways to lay out a space is a thrill, and this bathroom was so cramped--a big clawfoot tub used to sit in the door swing area here--that carving this walk-in shower out of borrowed space made the bathroom feel twice as big. Keeping our palette clean and bright--shades of pale gray and white with polished nickel accents--also kept the look fresh and modern.

The fence's design, with its slender vertical lines, draws the eye toward the site's lovely borrowed scenery. Board and batten mixed with lap siding, mahogany doors, Bevolo copper gas lanterns, screened side porch and master suite face "borrowed" views of the May River across the street.

A central atrium opens the first and second floor foyers to the glazed cupola above. The huge semicircular window borrows natural light from the cupola and draws it into the primary suite study on the new third floor.
