Design ideas for a large modern partial sun front yard stone driveway in Miami.

Black Timor Bamboo, native paurotis and thrinax radiata palms create a dense vegetative buffer along the perimeter of the property, as required by the City of Sanibel for this newly completed residence, and serve to soften the low landscape walls from the passerby perspective. The landscape transforms from the bamboo and native buffer vegetation mix to a modern and organized landscape palette that complements the architectural style, Regional Modernism, of the residence and the linearity of the reflection entry pool, the lagoon pool and landscape walls. Colorful bromeliads and tropical groundcovers were creatively incorporated with native vegetation to achieve a completed and unique tropical landscape design that complies with the City of Sanibel Vegetation Code.

The homeowner’s only request was to keep as much of the existing landscape as possible on this Sanibel remodel. As the driveway winds around, you are enticed by the pockets of tropical plantings located in and around the stately royal palms lining the drive. The color sparks your interest as you move down the drive to a rounded island with a simplistic approach to a tropical courtyard. The coral walkway and border leads you to the front door, but the angel trumpet and its significant blooms catches your eye. Entering into the courtyard lined with colorful bromeliads and orchids, the sound of the custom water feature gives you a sense of serenity. Both the pottery and fountain add to the rustic ocean ambiance. An existing seahorse statue became the inspiration for a whimsical water feature, and is surrounded by alocasia, apostle iris and ground orchids. The sound of the water can be heard not only throughout the courtyard but also around the resort-styled outdoor living area. The deep cushioned teak furniture provides a tranquil atmosphere and utilizes the space under the home to create a comfortable outdoor living space. Bougainvillea give you a spectacular burst of color as you enter the ocean side of the residence. Existing spindle and sabal palms anchor the beds containing firebush and coontie to attract butterflies. The use of grass, mulch and the shell pathway towards the beachside area adds an element of dimension. This expansive property was truly a diamond in the rough and now provides beauty and enjoyment for the homeowners.

Inspiration for a tropical landscaping in Miami.

This newly completed residence is located on Sanibel Island on a unique bayou site with western exposure for a perfect view of the sunset. The main entry is a long narrow drive that was planted with seven large native live oaks to create an oak canopy with a native hammock understory consisting of native shrubs and ferns for a tunnel like entry experience. Three large curved coconuts sit at the drive terminus and frame the view of the entry lawn and landscape at the front of the residence. There was a strong emphasis on incorporating native palms and vegetation into a Zen-inspired garden feel. Native paurotis palms and green and silver thrinax palms were carefully specified and trimmed for use as architectural elements on the tall exterior walls. Tropical bamboo of many different varieties were incorporated into the buffers for both ambiance and screening purposes. Landscape grasses and bromeliad species were planted for interest along the front entry way. Native shrubs and perennial dune grasses and groundcovers were incorporated into the side yard buffer and in the back yard on the berm at the bayou edge to blend the built element into the natural landscape. The sodded area in the back and side yards functions as stormwater detention area and prevents stormwater from running directly into the ecological sensitive bayou. All City of Sanibel codes were met for this environmentally and ecosystem rich site including holding and mitigating stormwater runoff on site and meeting the 75% native plant requirement in all vegetation categories.

Backyard patio make-over. Building on existing elements (Palm trees) we removed a lot of outgrown and outdated material and freshened up the patio borders with colorful canna's, various bromeliads, Alocasia California, and a fresh layer of mulch and landscape pebbles.

One feature palm was salvaged when this seven year old Mediterranean style residence on the Caloosahatchee River underwent a complete landscape and hardscape remodel in the beginning of 2015. The landscape had not been properly maintained for a few years prior to when the new owners purchased in 2014, was overgrown and unhealthy and therefore was in need of a complete evaluation and landscape overhall. The original red brick concrete pavers were removed and replaced with a gold travertine blend with ivory travertine border for accent. The front entry stair was expanded and redesigned for a more significant and welcoming front door. The side yard had a significant slope from the foundation of the house to the seawall and had significant erosion damage. This space was re-graded, grading and drainage was repaired and re-routed and a 70 foot long retaining wall was installed. The retaining wall not only solved the stormwater washout problem, but also provided a level space for a private side yard tropical palm garden and pathway to access both the pool deck and the walk along the seawall. The stairs to the pool deck, dock and landing were all completely modified for ease of use. Aside from the tropical and beautiful landscape that was installed, the most significant visual and aesthetic improvement to this property was the addition of three 9 foot tall by 5 foot wide natural stone water walls with stone basins that were designed to fit within the archways at the driveway entry and designed to complement the architecture of the residence. These water walls offer ambient noise, visual interest and have completely improved the use and entry experience for the homeowner and visitors. Tropical shade bromeliads, alocasias, cordylines and ferns dress up the new landscape beds at the entry and along the front foundation where previously red brick intersected the foundation walls for a mundane solution. Other elements of interest include the cable wire espalier that was installed in front of the archway on both sides of the entry way for colorful bougainvillea trellis vine to climb and soften the tall walls and eventually connect over the arch. Confederate jasmine vine will soften the garage corner on the cable wire trellis installed and there is also a 4 foot wide by 18 foot tall cable wire espalier on a tall, once stark, wall on the pool deck. Three pool planters were reconfigured and planted with large triple princess palms and bold blue-tone pottery was selected to add interest and color to the pool deck. Micro-drip irrigation was connected to the pool planters and pottery for a low maintenance solution. This project was a collaborative effort with an ideal client who was open to all design ideas, who worked closely with the design team, and was a great success for both the client and R.S. Walsh Landscaping.
