Northern met up with the installers who had zero experience of roofing or the installation of tiles, which it turned out was a huge advantage because they followed our instructions to the letter. The fact that one of the crew was a calculus major also helped when it came time to calculate the gauge for the battening. All in all they did an amazing job and it is only unfortunate that very few people who see the roof actually realize just how complicated some of the detailing was!

Inspiration for a transitional bathroom remodel in New York

This newly-created Mud Room/Green Lab was an added benefit to a kitchen remodeling project. It was designed from an existing 9'x5' garage storage space previously unaccessible via the main house. The clients requested, if possible to create a new space for their Bonsai Tree collection. Obviously, the plants needed water, day light and easy outside access. The kitchen space was also a bit too small. Fortunately, the size of the garage itself gave us the possibility to move the entire back wall inside without sacrificing the parking ability. New supporting beams were calculated by the structural engineer. Enlarging the previous storage allowed us to consider it a “Mud room/Green Lab"and provide the connection between the new spaces.

These are crown pleats with a brushed satin nickel curtain rod and cone finial. The cone matches the finial on the top of the lamps as well. The material is embroidery with silver and dark blue to complement the wall color. The drapes are placed in front of custom plantation shutters in extra-wide 4 1/2" louvers. Finally, we upgraded the drapes with black-out lining so they can be fully closed and block almost all the light. Don't forget to calculate an exact return for the drapery sides when doing black-out. That way you capture all the light leaking out the sides. The client was very pleased with the final results. Did everyone notice the pillow from the same fabric on the bed?

Archadeck of Austin came up with a winning design including a stone retaining wall, patio, outdoor kitchen, and fire pit. All the dimensions had to be carefully calculated so we didn’t go over the allowed percentage of impervious space. We built the stone retaining wall on a concrete footer, built the stone walls for the outdoor kitchen, then filled in the patio area with sand. Sand is perfect for a project like this because it’s permeable and it packs nicely while water still filters through it.

This single-family home was designed as part of an existing development plan near Albinea (in the province of Reggio Emilia), for which there were prescribed traditional design guidelines imposed. The architectural form, therefore, references a traditional Emilian farmhouse with a central "porta morta" area that acts as the entrance and stairwell. The color palette blends in with the surrounding hay fields, and the rear of the house offers decks and balconies overlooking the hills of the Reggiano Apennines. Our challenge was to focus on the efficiency of the building envelope, without changing the orientation of the building. Despite the fact that the shorter side of the house is facing South and through careful design calculations and testing during construction, we were able to achieve Class A in the CasaClima rating scheme, one of the highest Italian certifications available. TBDA acted as architect and Passive House consultant, performing the rigorous calculations in conjunction with the spatial, structural, mechanical, and esthetic design considerations. Cadmium Interiors selected interior finishes and furniture. Passive Houses have inherently good indoor air quality due to the continuous ventilation and condensation-proof thermal shell, but we took this to the next level by becoming a pilot project for the Healthy Homes Initiative. All construction materials, finishes, paints, adhesives, caulks, etc., were selected to be non-toxic (i.e., no-added-formaldehyde cabinet construction), using Greenguard as a standard where possible.

This modern style wine cellar has floor to ceiling glass panels on two walls. Wine storage appears to be floating by using a cable suspension system and provides a premium view of the stone walls behind. The cables are supported by the iron column & beam system. This fireplace elevation demonstrates the art of balancing bold materials with technical precision. To create a seamless, high-end look, we designed a floor-to-ceiling surround using polished slab material with strategic Schluter trim detailing for clean, professional edges. The design features a sophisticated interplay of textures, pairing the reflective, polished wall with a matte black slab hearth. Anchoring the space is a linear modern fireplace and a large-scale, sculptural tiered chandelier that adds vertical interest and luxury. Every dimension, from the 93-inch height above the floor to the specific slab grid, was meticulously calculated to ensure the fireplace serves as a balanced, architectural anchor for the living area.
