These contrast beautifully with the rich wood floors. Glass doors in the top portion of the sink wall cabinets let the homeowner display a collection of red and white stoneware. The client used red accents throughout, including red-bound cookbooks and dish towels to add that country flavor and create a happy, playful look. The centerpiece of this kitchen is the Cottage Black Island - stout chamfered posts support a French Country shelf, open on both sides and front. A carved top valance and French Country trim around the bottom give a handcrafted look, and the bun feet are a playful addition. Many of the drawers have specific inserts calculated exactly to fit the clients various items, from placemats to knives, to spices and utensils. Reminiscent of times past, the client chose hot-rolled and waxed steel for the island top, giving it a rustic-industrial look, and setting it apart from the leathered black granite of the perimeter.

Natural light finishes the story. Moving through the space across the day, it deepens the oak grain, catches the metal, and lets the black railing guide the eye along the handrail's elliptical path from start to finish. Single-family new construction in Albinea (RE), Italy, certified Class A by CasaClima Agency for high energy efficiency. This single-family home was designed as part of an existing development plan near Albinea (in the province of Reggio Emilia), for which there were prescribed traditional design guidelines imposed. The architectural form, therefore, references a traditional Emilian farmhouse with a central "porta morta" area that acts as the entrance and stairwell. The color palette blends in with the surrounding hay fields, and the rear of the house offers decks and balconies overlooking the hills of the Reggiano Apennines. Our challenge was to focus on the efficiency of the building envelope, without changing the orientation of the building. Despite the fact that the shorter side of the house is facing South and through careful design calculations and testing during construction, we were able to achieve Class A in the CasaClima rating scheme, one of the highest Italian certifications available. BPLAN panels can be applied anywhere in the world and in different contexts, in the same project, given the properties of the materials you use, the quality of production processes and finishes. In the United Arab Emirates, BPLAN panels were applied in the same project, from the outside, giving elegance, dynamism and versatility to the elevations, to the interior, with panels that divide the spaces with formal wealth grid. Outside, BPLAN panels mark the main entry points, in large spans, in a formal and calculation exercise that confers the continuity of the pattern, without structural elements that could disturb the reading of the same. This exercise of commitment between elegance and resistance was incorporated in aluminum with 8mm thickness, combined with a peripheral structure in stainless steel. The other elements that punctuate the elevations consist of self-supporting panels that give formal versatility and the use of the elevation, because they are associated with sliding rails. In all applications abroad, it is evident the interrelationship with the interior of the building, in a gesture of continuity and coherence. Serving as a winter retreat for a family of world travelers, a thoughtfully composed program of calm, comforting spaces imbuing casual elegance is presented effortlessly in the landscape. Oriented around a central grand oak and its adjacent loblolly pine, the home wraps around them, celebrating the engagement of nature while maintaining privacy from neighboring homes. Working within height restrictions intended to keep massing as low to the ground as possible, we moved the ground plane up and the expression down to present an appearance of a home that lives low. Calculated plays on scale and proportion intentionally have different effects from different vantage points, ensuring the viewer perceives the architecture as humanly scaled from each important introduction to the home. This is the first certified Passive House in the Chicago area, built by Biltmore Insulated Concrete (thermal shell) and Evolutionary Home Builders (GC). TBDA acted as architect and Passive House consultant, performing the rigorous calculations in conjunction with the spatial, structural, mechanical, and esthetic design considerations. Cadmium Interiors selected interior finishes and furniture. Passive Houses have inherently good indoor air quality due to the continuous ventilation and condensation-proof thermal shell, but we took this to the next level by becoming a pilot project for the Healthy Homes Initiative. All construction materials, finishes, paints, adhesives, caulks, etc., were selected to be non-toxic (i.e., no-added-formaldehyde cabinet construction), using Greenguard as a standard where possible.

Residence in Sunset SC Designed & built by Studio Kunstwerke, who unfortunately is no long is business Roof installed by a group of university student as a holiday project Tile: Pantile in Weathered Grey blend This was the second project we worked on with the designer and it certainly provided a number of challenges with curved eaves, raking gables and ridge tiles that were not parallel to the eaves. Northern met up with the installers who had zero experience of roofing or the installation of tiles, which it turned out was a huge advantage because they followed our instructions to the letter. The fact that one of the crew was a calculus major also helped when it came time to calculate the gauge for the battening. All in all they did an amazing job and it is only unfortunate that very few people who see the roof actually realize just how complicated some of the detailing was!
